| | Mike, obviously, your surgery did not affect your sense of humor. I think I should start saving my used tea bags to blend a special hodgepodge when tobacco is totally banned. I think it should be called Acorn in honor of the NC oak trees. |

| Thanks, Carlos. I "need" a calabash, too, so I'll go check it out.

I sold them all off because they are very difficult to keep clean while smoking (lot of gurgle), and I got tired of the smoke coming up into my eyes.
They are a great pipe to just let hang in the mouth, just didn't enjoy smoking them.
Things to consider......

Good point Mike-- I'm glad that you said something... Eltang makes a pretty fantastic shape that I've been considering tuning my radar in on but now I'm reconsidering. One thing I can't stand is a pipe that's a gurgler and won't easily take a cleaner.
Kind regards,

| Oom Pauls can be an aquired taste and technique, I have four a Dunhill Red Bark, Barling TVF, Hardcastle System and a Bewlay. They are however my pipe of choice in the winter, due to having to smoke in my office car park (Due to Smoking Regulations) thedy are an excellent hand warmer. I have found my fist two smoke a great deal better than the cheaper ones, also Mike's comment regarding tobacco moisture is very valid. I would still say however go for one! |

| Thanks for all of the comments and feedback, fellows. I have completed a trade for an oom paul and am waiting til this weekend to smoke it. I want to have a goodly amount of time to properly prepare the pipe and tobacco and really give it a fair trial.
I will make sure the tobacco is dry enough (to at least not help with potential gurgling) and have a few pipe cleaners at the ready. It is supposed to be very cold here this weekend so this will be a true test as to how comfortable of a clencher it will be as I will be sitting with my hands in my pockets!

Yeah I'm not gonna be able to do that. My biggest pet peev is a pipe that gurgles, and if the inevitable problem I am bound to encounter is inherent in the design and unable to be corrected I'll certainly end up reselling the pipe at a loss--- making me wish I'd have spent my sawbucks on a different pipe. I've been down this road before and I always end up barefoot on the rocky gravel at the end of it.
Kind regards,
Ian |

| I did not wait til the weekend. I smoked the oom paul on the way to work this morning: it was great.
The bowl is rather deep, so I only packed it about half full with Virginia Woods. The pipe smoked smoothly though I did wait anxiously for a gurgle. I got just one, and to remedy that I exhaled twice through the stem and paused my toking for just a few beats. After that, no problem.
I've decided that I do like the oom paul shape and will begin my search for another one.
Thanks for all the comments.

| | I have an old Oom Paul that I bought cheap about 30-40 years ago. It has an ingenious way of dealing with the gurgling problem. The stem has an aluminum fitting like a trumpet in the bottom end, which condenses the moisture. Then it drips down into a pit. The mortise is drilled about a half inch deeper below the air hole, and the condensate drips down into there. It works! The pipe never gurgles. I think you could drill out any Oom Paul like that. You probably wouldn't even need the aluminum thingy. But you really need to keep that pit cleaned out; Q-tips work very well for that. |

| I have 2 solutions that worked for me now I own 8 Oom Pauls as they are hands free & easy on my teeth
1] I have a ceiling fan that I adjusted on the low speed & it gently blows the smoke slightly to the side & up {in Reverse}
2] I had the airways opened on 3 of my Dunhill & 1 Caminetto & never have a moisture problem. Even if I do they will easily pass a cleaner mid bowl to the bottom |
