It would be unreasonable to expect a carver to guarantee a certain number of specifically marked pipes without knowing if he can move all of them. If I was a carver I wouldn't risk some picky ass member ordering a pipe and then backing out at the last minute, leaving me with a pipe I might not be able to sell.
I say if you request a forum/club pipe you better be prepared to pay! _________________

I was asked ONCE to pay in advance for a member to member tobacco purchase. Imagine that. Of course I canceled the deal. I was insulted.
A forum pipe would be entirely different. I agree, JP. Pony up, in good faith. I can't imagine a carver risking his reputation by stiffing us. Reputations are never squandered. The word gets out. |

| Well, seeing that the big show in Chicago will be next week and many of the carvers will be there,I guess someone can make some inquiries and let us know about it.

| | Mark, I was referring to the massive headache I had with the Haven meerschaum pipe. I paid in advance and it took almost 2 years to get all the pipes. Unles the shape is far out, the carver will have no problem selling one a member does not like as long as he waits to inscribe the club pipe wording. If the blast is not first rate or there are sandpits, etc., a member may not be happy with that choice. After viewing a photo of his pipe, payment is sent and inscription made. Bounced checks are dealt with by Leroy. |

I remember that fiasco well!
I believe the key here is dealing with a reputable carver and knowing that person well enough to get a genuine commitment from them. The members will have to be commited enough to guarantee their commitment with a deposit or full payment. When we did the forum pipes with Kirk Bosi we used the deposit process. _________________
