    Help with a name

Congrats! The Freakonomics guys addressed the question of whether a child's name has any significant impact on their lives and the answer appears to be "no". They point out that the name people give their children says more about parents sending (at least subconsciously) a societal message...

Watch maker, watch maker make me a watch

Very cool. This is a job I could NEVER do. I do not have the patience for manipulating tiny little objects like that.

Watch maker, watch maker make me a watch

Cool video! I never gave watchmaking much thought but this is pretty impressive

Is there an easier way to do this?

That is pretty darn impressive work!

    What's your 9 to 5??

I am a doctor of chiropractic in private practice. I have been working on a PhD in neuroscience for the past 6 years so I have been doing research and teaching at UC Riverside while I continue to practice. I will have a PhD in neuroscience to go with my professional degree this September.

    sharpening knives

I use a smith's diamond sharpening stone with some honing fluid followed by a leather strop. They run about $25. There might be better systems out there but I can get a very sharp edge with this system.

Exactly!  Stated much more concisely that I ever could.  I tend to rambled on which is why I don't compete in these silly debate competitions as an adult :lol!:

That's a valid point... I suppose that the competitions just gradually evolved into this. Competitors probably started noticing that the faster speakers had an advantage and they started pushing the envelope to gain an edge. Obviously they don't want to do away with the rules all-together...

I understand your point but that is why there is a difference between "speech" and "debate" competitions. The same way there is a difference between "sprinting" and "cross-country" competitions. If you knew absolutely nothing about track and field and you saw a marathoner running you might...

It's easy to imagine how these competitions evolve (devolve?) into this. The debaters have a time limit to present their opening statements and subsequent responses. Naturally, providing the most possible information in the allotted time both enables you to flush out your argument in greater...

This is what I'm referring to. Here we have a white guy from Harvard in the semifinals of a collegiate debate competition... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZZeDq90Ar4k" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" loading="lazy"...

I enjoy a Coors or Bud myself at times. :D  I'm just saying that what sells in this country is usually more about marketing than quality. Thank you 8)

one last point: I think it is a significant flaw in American society that we base so much of our opinions on the appearance and/or delivery of the person providing the message rather than the content of the message. I like to refer to this as the craft beer phenomenon. We are all about...
