Just joined the forum, I am a relatively new pipe smoker in southern Oregon and open to any advice on technique, pipes, or tobacco (including where to buy because there are no good shops around me!)

Welcome! There are several good on-line stores, start with smokingpipes.com and there are lots of others if they don't have what you want.

Awesome, thanks for the tips and replies everybody! I have gotten about 7 estates from eBay and a box of stems I have been working on shaping (very slowly), I do amateur gunsmithing as a hobby, so it has been a nice change of pace working on wood and vulcanite/acrylic. Any tips on buffing stems? I just made/fixed my first pipe from a broken stummel that I used a 30-06 case to extend the stem on the bowl side.

Buffing tip #1: use a SLOW speed buffer, not high speed. Light touch.
