Hi,
First time joining, usually only a lurker. Just turned 81, started on a corncob at 13 years old. Parents thought it would keep me from smoking cigarettes, so they allowed a pipe at home [ different world then] Little did they know started Camels at 10 years old. [sneaky kid]
Anyway pipes of and on, since, mostly cigarettes, but always had a pipe somewhere. Love most English tobacco with a Peterson.

Welcome aboard Doc. Nam 67 to 70, two tours. Unfortunately, can't tell where I was or who with as our black ops mission was never declassified. To be truthful I'm not sure it was ever authorized. CIA directed if that says anything. But we did have a corpsman in our unit. You guys were a godsend.

Met some of you guys in the past, almost impossible to get disability service connected, because you can't prove where you were. A great dis-service to black op guys, used up and spit out by Uncle Sam. Proud to meet you brother. Smoke um if you got um. Doc

Welcome NamDoc. I also started out sneaking camels, only at 14 instead of 10! That was in 2006 though, so I'm a little younger lol. I'm always amazed when people say they smoked a pipe so young, I could never of had the patience to enjoy it before I reached 30.

Thank you ALL for the great reception, this is a general

thank you, not being prolific writer. Doc

I could never of had the patience to enjoy it before I reached 30.
Never enjoyed it at that age, just smoked and tried to inhale, thinking I was cool.
Many years latter before I understood pipe smoking is like a meditative ritual, that brings peace and enjoyment to the BoB, when done fast or while concentrating on outside distractions, I lose the experience.

Like you I started early, maybe 12 or so, stealing my Dad's Camels, Pall Malls, whatever. By the time I got out of service I was doing pack and a half a day. 2 months after discharge I quit cigarettes cold turkey but that's a long story for another time. Anyway, when I started college in 70, I had a couple of older classmates who smoked pipes and I decided to try it. Added advantage was a lot of the profs at Iowa State would let you smoke a pipe in class. You just had to sit in the back and open a window. One philosophy prof, who looked a bit like Einstein even smoked in class. Remember this was 1970. We had a pipe shop in campus town run by an older gentleman. He got me started with a Sav bulldog, then an Everyman billiard by Comoys. Started with McBarens tins and then got into BSOSM which became my main go to. Sitting on a bench in Central campus, puffing away while reading or studying. Ahh, good times. Been at it ever since.

I don't need the disability, thank God. But what does piss me off is I can't collect my Bronze Star and 2 Purple Hearts. Their excuse was if we award them we have tell them where you were and what you were doing. You are right. We were used up and spit out.
