Any recommendations for a tinned tobacco comparable to Lane 1Q? And, has anyone tried Ole Shenandoah Barrel No. 76?

Here's a few blends that are similar to Lane 1-Q.  Every other major tobacco manufacturer has a copy of 1-Q because it is the #1 seller.  Some are hits, some are misses.  Most are bulk, a couple are tinned.  Try an ounce or a tin and you can decide.

Sutliff (Altadis) 1-M (bulk)
McClelland T-Q (bulk)
Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal (blue) (bulk and tinned)
Peter Stokkebye Golden Dansk (bulk)
Captain Black Royal (blue) (pouch or tub)
Newminster #48 Danish Gold (bulk)

Thanks! Do only the drug store brands contain chemicals, or do all aromatic brands contain some kind of chemical for preservation? Do the non-drug store brands typically contain much less?

Most Cavendish style aromatics contain Propylene Glycol (PG), a humectant that preserves moisture and allows the flavoring to penetrate the leaf.  It also has anti-fungal properties that retards mold.  PG is a food grade additive found in many foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.  Tasteless, odorless and "generally recognized as safe" by the FDA.

Without PG, tobacco dries out very fast and turns to powder during processing.  Most, if not all pipe tobaccos contain some amount of PG.  Without it, mold soon develops and ruins the tobacco in short order.  PG is a good thing, but some blenders overdo it, resulting in the proverbial "soupy, goopy" blend.

tastee and actually tAstes like it smells.

Several reviewers have favorably compared Peter Stokkebye "Nougat" 24 to 1Q. PS 24 is a bulk product.

Captain black original, Lane limited 1Q, Mc Barren Vanilla flake and a lil Cult Blood Red Moon and mix it all together real good and you'll have the best tobacco you've ever had in your life, I call it Heavenly

Watch City Cigar's 4-Q

Same flavor, but no chemical taste. Doesn't overpower the tobacco flavor.
Do you get a chemical taste from 1-Q? My palette must be fried because I just don't detect what other pipe smokers taste with the chemical taste. The only weird thing I tasted was from Granger when I bought two 12oz tubs right before Lane moved to Denmark, I got like a burning plastic taste and smell from it. It was awful and my tongue was scorched. I do see posts where pipe smokers get that chemical taste. Some smokers say they get it from Captain Black. I've been smoking CB original, Royal and Gold for over ten years and never got a chemical taste. Maybe I do and I don't know that it IS a chemical taste and just think that is how it's supposed to taste, I don't know lol.

I never detected a chem taste until I smoked predominately non-aromatics. When I went back and tried 1-Q it was different. I find 4-Q is more to my liking because more of the natural tobacco flavor comes through.

The only aromatics I enjoy now have a light topping.

This is a fun throwback thread, I'll chip in my 2 cents.

I second what cwbristow said: Watch City's 4-Q is one of very few aromatics I like. I personally can't stand Lane 1-Q; Watch City's version tastes like what 1-Q should have been.
