    Your late evening unwind smoke...

I think I've gone all over the map with this topic and rediscovered Nightcap last summer. I find myself smoking it nearly every night now when the weather is mild (i.e. not cold :face: ). Its just darn good…every time. When Nightcap seems blah, I reach for something punchy like Escudo or Balkan...

    Oregon City Irishman's Five O'clock

As far as I know, the House of Calabash website is still up and running: https://squareup.com/market/house-of-calabash-2 They don't have the best customer service for their online customers, but your order will eventually get done. Last year I ordered a pound of Irishman's Five O'Clock. It took...

    John Patton's Storm Front

Storm Front is one of my all time favorites. When I first discovered it with the help of some fellas of BOB I thought I found a the holy grail of pipe tobacco. I still find that good ol' sweet rapture with it frequently. My favorite pipe for it also happens to be the crappiest pipe I own, made...

    Penzance higher than P$C

I've been tracking Penzance on Ebay for a while. It will regularly get over $100 and sometimes in the $175 range for an 8oz. It's absolutely ridiculous that someone would want THAT blend that bad. I have a theory that it's the name as much as anything.   I bought a 8oz bag a few weeks ago from...

    Cellaring and new blend trial

Oh my! I should have asked for permission before I threw away the rest of my turkey dinner then, too! God Bless America!!

    R.A.T.S. Rarely Available Tobacco Signal

Six tins of 2008 St James Flake at Pipestud. $15 a tin! And many more gems on his "Black Friday" sale.

    Cellaring and new blend trial

If a blend doesn't strike my fancy within the first couple of bowls (different pipes are mandatory here), I have no problem discarding the tin. There are just too many good options to be stuck with something you don't care for just for the sake of finishing your tin. At only $10-18 a tin (I...

What is your favorite VaPar ?

Today, it's St. James Woods. With so many Va/Pers having a much pronounced dose of the P-weed, I think St. James Woods is perfect. Sweet and mildly peppery. One has to appreciate McClelland's Virginias, though. Not all do. I think McClelland's Virginias are the best value out there.

Do you remember your first pipe tobacco?

As I was getting "sold" on the whole notion of smoking pipes, my big worry was giving up the strength of a bold cigar for what I perceived to be a lighter, more bland affair. With that in mind, my tobacco pimp brought out some SG 1792 and put it in a Peterson for me to sample. "Trust me," he...

    Steve Books/House of Calabash

I found out today by Eva that the House of Calabash's debit card machine is broken and they will only cash, check, money order, or Western Union. If I didn't already know how unbelievable his blends were, I may have moved on from their blends and wrote them off. It is frustrating but such is...

    Oldest in yer cellar

Wow, Doc. That is impressive. I would love to get my hands on any one of those truely vintage tins, especially the Baby's Bottom. I have a small collection of older tins: http://www.tobaccocellar.com/derlict311

    Steve Books/House of Calabash

Lat heavy-yes, 37%, I think...but Syrian Lat. My mouth waters thinking about Irishman's because it is as perfect of a blend as I have ever found. It is a replica of the old 759 apparently with a heavy Turkish amount also. Every bowl of it I've smoked has kept that initial "wow" factor. If you...

    Steve Books/House of Calabash

Yes, he's up and running. I placed an order last week with Eva for Irishman's Five O'Clock. Their Facebook page had this post September 24th: "So due to some technical difficulties, you can reach us at the phone number 503-828-8391. This is til further the number to contact the shop and place...

    What are you smoking?

Dunhill Nightcap in a Pete 302. I haven't smoked this in at least two years. Boy, this is a treat in the evening!

If you had to choose 5 GL Pease blends...

GL Pease is batting in the .800's for me or better. I've tried many, but not all. With the exception of Fillmore, which I found too overpowering, and Robusto, which I found to be a plain cigar blend and mostly uninspiring, all of Pease's blends kick serious ass. Carefully constructed by a man...

Pairing Your Drink With your Tobacco...Recommendations

I was just thinking about this topic while in the yard last weekend, enjoying some mild Midwestern weather. What is it about our hobby that has us daydreaming about "the perfect smoke" over and over? Coffee is a gimme, certainly. No argument there. I had Blood Orange Italian Soda from Costco...

    Embarcadero

I've found that although Embarcadero has more taste in some pipes than others, it's pretty much universally awesome. It doesn't slap you with flavor but feathers you. Pipesmoking 101: experiment until you find something you enjoy. Settling on a fixed way you like a tobacco is OK too! I like...
