    JR's

The continued references to JR stores in NJ, MI, and elsewhere (as opposed to the 3 NC stores) has confused me as the websites look similar, but the stores did not. In addition each of the websites did not mention other stores outside of their area. Of course, I admint I'm probably the only one...

Thanks for the tip - I love Italian.

    Tips??

I was going to start a thread to ask a question, but very glad to have read this thread, and think I will just put it here. I have a feeling that I in general pack a pipe to tight, but that's sort of easy to determine. My question is, can you pack a pipe to loosely, and if so, what are the...

    Tips??

I'm curious by what you mean "half bowls." Do you mean you only load a bowl half way up, or that you load it all the way up, but only smoke it half way down?

    Aged Full Virginia Flake

If anyone is interested in acquiring some aged FVF, I have one last jar for sale containing 8 oz of FVF that is now 27 months old. See details at: https://www.brothersofbriar.com/t14299-tobacco-4-sale-aged-virginias-english-new-on-mac-barens

    First time with FVF

I've never tried Dunhill Flake, but this is exactly how I would describe Stokkebye's Luxury Twist Flake. I'll have to try the Dunhill someday.

    Other Pipe Forums

Personally, the reason I like this forum is the soothing beige background.

    My extremely newbie questions.

Lot of good advice here, so not a whole lot to add. As many have said, it's just so individualistic and subjective. No surprise there I imagine. I guess I would like to reinforce one thing someone touched on. I would definitely recommend that you have at least 4 different pipes. Don't have to...

    First time with FVF

Wait 'til you try some that's been aged a few years. Of course, I love FVF both new and aged. Hard to beat.

Going to a Tinder Box for first time

I pretty much agree with this. Once I discovered the wider world of pipesandcigars.com and smokingpipes.com, plus some better B & M's around the state, I never went back. I got pretty tired of their aromatic's fairly quickly basically concluding they were closer to the drugstore class than the...

    JR's

Wow - I started this thread, but for some reason even though I'm "following" the thread, I got NO emails about this thread; so I had NO idea there had been this many responses. Where to start: @ everybody who's mentioned Lew, free cigars, or past glory days: I must have missed all these, but...

    Flake vs Ribbon cut

Mac Baren's Vanilla Creme comes in a flake version. Dan's Sweet Vanilla Honeydew is a "pre-rubbed" or broken flake.

    JR's

Glad you like it, and thanks for asking. I wish I could claim to have written it, but alas.... The reason I'm glad you ask is that I generally like to attribute quotes to their authors, and I'm not sure why I did not in this case. Not absolutely sure, but I think this is where I found it...

    Flake vs Ribbon cut

So true, so true!! Part of what makes this hobby so fun is it not? I have Mac Baren's Vanilla Creme in both ribbon and flake. Ended up deciding that at least for that blend, the pipe made more difference than the cut style.

    Looking for aromatic suggestions

My two favorites are Mac Baren's Vanilla Cream, and CAO/Dan's Sweet Vanilla Honeydew. Both have excellent flavorings on top of high quality tobaccos, so as the flavoring fades you still have a great taste. And yes, did I mention I have some of the Mac Baren's for sale? See...

    Aged Full Virginia Flake

Unlike some here, I loved FVF when I first bought it. Of course, the first purchase was a tin, so no telling how old it was. (Gotta love McClelland for at least letting you know what year your tin is from.) In any case, I always loved the sweet aftertaste it left. I'd heard it aged well, so I...

    JR's

Seeing the mention of JR's in one of the threads as a great place to get some good pipe tobaccos at a good price, sent me searching to see if there were any threads discussing JR's. None of my searches returned any hits, which, since I know the term exists in at least one thread, does call into...

So Let's Say Your State Bans Tobacco Shipment...

I'm also in a similar position. I cellared up because I was convinced that either this would occur, or Federal Taxes on pipe tobacco would become so high as to drive many blends off the market. I still think that will happen.

Help selecting a "Prototypical" McClelland & Mac Baren

I'm another one that mostly delves into the bulk tobacco world. About the only tins I have are what either can't be gotten in bulk (Royal Yacht's on my list from that standpoint), or when I just want to try something or see it in my stops at JR's. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned McClelland's...

    A smoky suggestion?

I second this one, but expensive. Sure would liked to have tried Raven's Wing.
