Dunhill my mixture 965 THE BIG LETDOWN?!?!!!!

I've never tried 965, but there are some tobaccos which you have to smoke for a while before you really 'get' them. St Bruno was one for me. I thought it was rubbish at first, but now I love it.

Tasting Notes For 'Straight Up' Tobacco

I'm no expert either, but I can recognise perique, VA and Latakia easily enough. Maybe Cavendish as well. I've never tried the dreaded 'Clan', but I keep meaning to, to see if I think it's as awful as everyone says! Each to his own, I say.

    Who's right?

Good article, but I take slight issue with this: If you're smoking one way and enjoying it, but all the experts say you should smoke another way, I think you should at least give the expert-approved way a try, and not just once but say for a week: you might find that you enjoy your pipe even...

    War and Peace

I read it in the Penguin Classics translation by Rosemary Edmonds about 20 years ago. A year or so ago, I started to re-read it, in the first English translation, by Louise and Aylmer Maude, but I'm afraid I ran out of steam about a third of the way in. However, my bookmark's still in it, and...

    What are you smoking?

How very alliterative! Sam Gawith's 'Best Brown Flake' in a smooth meer. I didn't think I'd really take to a straight VA, because they tend to be a bit on the bland side, but, half-way through my second-ever tin of it, it's become a firm favourite, and a new regular.

    My Nominee for President!

Not that it's my business, but pipe-smokers surely couldn't do better than Tabak Obama.

Beautiful Morta Cavalier from Mr. Chris Askwith

All Chris's pipes are great - I've got two, neither of them commissions - but that one's a stunner! I want a Morta pipe one day, when I've got plenty of dosh to spare.
