Are we in a golden age of pipes?

Columbus is a pipe Mecca. And man, do I miss it. The Haven, Pipes and Pleasures, Barclays and one more, whose name is escaping me at the moment. All great pipe centric stores. I suppose the term "golden age" is rather nebulous. As far as acceptance of pipes in life, the 50's had to be the...

Ya know who makes amazing pipes??

I've a few Roush's and just can't praise them enough. My one Roush is this Massive bent chimney. The bowl is nearly 4 inches tall. Man, when i have the time to smoke it, that pipe just never fails. His blasting is just wonderful. I really lean toward Danish shapes, but I love Larry's stuff...

    Shape Debate: Rhodesian vs. Bulldog

Every Rhodisan - damn I can't spell - I've ever seen had a short, kinda subby bowl, while Bulldogs can have taller bowl. My fave derivation is the manly bull-moose pipe.

    Partial texture pipes.

In general, I detest partial rustication. Partial blasting or rustication can occasionally work, but for the most part is just looks bad. I'd much rather see a few pits or see a totally rusticated pipe.

Why we choose the pipes we do

I buy pipes on a truely emotional level. I might admire a pipe, but unless it really calls up some deep yearning within me, I won't buy it. Mostly, I look for beauty and harmony. I have no certain shape i look for, but rather a pipe with a soul sililar to mine. Wierd, i suppose, but there it...

    Interesting design...

They used to be common in the 20's and 30's. Dunhill even made one that you were supposed to attach to the dashboard of your car.

    Pipe cleaning recommendations.

Rubbing alcohol works fine. Everclear is probably better though. For the inside of the stem, take a pipe cleaner, dip it in the alcohol and run it through the stem. repeat this until the pipe cleaner comes out clean. Make sure to clean the morise too, but use the alcohol very sparingly...

    English Pipes

Ashtons are great pipes, but most of them are actually from frazed bowls. At least that's my understanding of it. I know he does turn some of them himself too. But how to tell the two apart is a mystery to me. I don't remember whether he oil cures his bowls. If my memory serves, he used to...

    BOG OAK

Morta pipes tend to be a shade heavier, and seeme to favor English blends. Also, as noted above, the tend to be on the smaller side as the blocks tend to crack as they dry out. They smoke very dry and cool, but the wood seemed to get hotter than briar to me. The grain is fascinating to look...

Looks like a Ferndown to me.

    Randy Wiley "tilted" pipes

It should smoke fine. One thing to remember is that hot air rises. Heat radiates out in all directions equally, and affectes the materials nearby in relation to their make up.
