    McClelland Classic Samsun

Classic Samsun is the first blend that I've tried that was good enough to distract me from the rest of my collection entirely. I have smoked very little else since May. It's a great, well-behaved VA with a little toasty flavor and fantastic room note from the Samsun. Drama Reserve is also good...

    Free tobacco from Altadis

I put my preferance as "non-aromatic", but they sent me Great Outdoors. It's not my cup of tea -- tastes like MacBarens.

    McClelland Classic Samsun

Anyone else smoking Classic Samsun? I just got it on Friday and spend the weekend trying it. I think the VA/oriental combination is a winner.

I'm getting into Burleys, any suggestions?

I'll second the motion on Solani ABF and Wessex BS -- I love both. These are thick flakes but you don't need to fool with them much to prepare them. I just take one slice and fold it in half twice then twist it a little to loosen it up. It is not easy to light this way, but once it gets going it...

    Wessex Burley Slice

I'm about 1/3 of the way through my first tin of Wessex Burley Slice -- what a great tobacco. It is all burley in the best possible way: mild tasting, very faintly sweet, nutty-cocoa flavors, toasty aroma, thick smoke, excelent burning, generous nicotine kick. It has been a while since I had...

    makin a razor

I would do the grinding wet if you can. The blade on a razor is so thin that it will overheat very quickly. I have a Pakastani-made razor that is heavy and thick -- you don't want that, it's like shaving with a meat cleaver. My wife bought me a nice Dovo razor about 10 years ago. The blade is...

    investing in the stock market?

Doc is dead-on about getting out of debt first. I wouldn't be thinking about investing at all if I had any credit-card debt or a car loan. I buy almost everthing on plastic, but that's only because they pay me a kickback; we pay the whole thing off every month so that we don't pay intrest. Our...

    investing in the stock market?

Are any of you all investing in the stock market? I'd be interested in how you search for good investments. Those of us who got our first real job in the 401k era are starting to accumulate the kind of money that takes some attention to keep it invested in smart things. Some of the people that...

    A Question For Mr. Pease

I have heard of people pressing their own blends using an old tobacco tin and some c-clamps. You just pack the tin full, cover it with plastic wrap, and put a loose fitting wood block on top. Three c-clamps give you a lot of pressure if you crank them down as hard as possible. If you make a...

    Different Wood

Apple wood makes a great pipe. It has a perfectly neutral flavor, but the grain is not as interesting as in briar.

I know there are some hunter & firearms types...

I saw a 45-90 snub nose revolver in a gun store once. The barrel was about half the length of the chamber. The owner of the store said he fired it once just to say he did it. He told me that if you can hold on to it the recoil sends the gun up over your head so that it swings around on your arm...

    Will burley "ghost" a pipe

Straight burley (like Solani ABF or Wessex Burley Slice) will not ghost a pipe, but the topping in CH will. I like CH a lot, but if you smoke a pouchfull in one of your pipes, it will taste like CH topping (it tastes like figs to me) for a while. It is not the strongest ghost flavor by a long...

    Fire'n Up the Wood Stove

In March last year we had a snow storm that knocked out the power for three days and left us with just a fireplace for heat. I kept that thing roaring just to keep the living room above 60 F. Not long after we bought a Joutl stove on the end-of-season discount and it is way better than a...

    Back of the bus...

I also tried out another forum and found that it was also like riding in the back of the bus . . . a short bus.

tragic workshop fire --> insurance money shopping spree

I would certainly stop at Boswell's on my next trip through Chambersburg, but they are closed on Sundays. I always drive through on one Sunday and back the next. Besides, the shop in Lynchburg is supposed to be a very good one.

tragic workshop fire --> insurance money shopping spree

I'd like to do that, but to get the maximum amount out of the insurance company, I have to spend the money on pipes rather than tobacco.

tragic workshop fire --> insurance money shopping spree

Yeah, that's what I said. Only I was brushing my teeth and looking out my bedroom window when I first saw it, so there was toothpaste on the window screen the next morning. My pipes & tobacco were in a cabinet 2' to the left of the door. Maybe I could have saved them when I first ran out there...

tragic workshop fire --> insurance money shopping spree

It was a spectacular fire, but no one was hurt. The shop is about 100 yards from my house. When this picture was taken the first fire truck had already showed up, but they only had enough water to keep the propane tank cool so they hadn't started puting the fire out.

    Burly

I like Barbary Coast a lot. It's tricky to handle, though, because of the cube cut. When it is moist it is hard to keep lit, when it's dry the cubes come apart and make it easy to overpack. Gravity feeding it into a big wide bowl seems to be the best technique, then it's great. The topping...

tragic workshop fire --> insurance money shopping spree

Hey everyone, I have not been on the board recently because we had a fire in January that wiped out my workshop, including my pipes and tobacco. I spend the spring and summer cleaning up and overseeing the reconstruction and now it's time to spend the insurance money. Next Monday I'm...
