    Three Nuns Tin Variations

The Egyptian National Tobacco Monopoly, known as The Eastern Co. SAE, produces (under license) a Three Nuns version which is quite authentic-tasting.

    Solani recommendations?

Solani 633: Virginia Flake with Périque is one of my very favourite blends.

    Dunhill Elizabethen Mixture.

Let's say that Elizabethan Mixture was not one of the offerings chosen for resurrection first off the bat. I believe that, if the new Dunhills do well commercially, further mixtures will be brought back, including EM. Having said that, there are so many Virginia-and-Périque mixtures in the...

    Actors and tobacco

I imagine that, if they are NOT pipe smokers, they are probably just taking a few puffs of some innocuous Cavendish-processed nothing. The actor William Conrad (1920-1994), however, who played Nero Wolfe on TV and many other parts, was indeed a dedicated pipe smoker and collector. He preferred...

Know anything about Niemeyer Macedonian OPENED THE TIN!

Theodorus Niemeyer is a Dutch company; SAIL mixtures are their most famous line. Whatever it is, it's likely to be lightweight, being a Dutch tobacco. Smoke it and tell us how you found it! What's the use of standing around guessing?

    Shape preferences, is this normal?

Smoke whatever you like!! Part of the pleasure of the hobby is smoking a pipe that looks good to YOU.

    Meerschaum durability

You CAN'T treat Meerschaums like crap. They are delicate objects. You were very lucky. I once dropped a Meer on a cement sidewalk, and it broke in three pieces. Now I only smoke them indoors, sitting on a couch.

    Pipe retort

I'm sorry, but I've never heard of a "pipe retort". I've no idea what it is.

Tampers: love 'em, hate 'em or lose 'em

All one really needs is a typical Czech pipe tool Unfortunately they are pretty useless as reamers. So one also needs a Sheffield type tool: which strikes me as the most useful all-round implement.

Plug knife - job specific or any old knife?

Any knife that's sharp! I prefer a big kitchen knife that cuts a slice at one movement.

The origins of standard shape names

I suspect many of the names were made up by manufacturers. Many are attributed to soldiers in campaign, like the Boer War, or the Zulu war. And can somebody tell the difference between a zulu and a yachtsman?? Or between a bull-dog and a Rhodesian? Before being named after "Uncle" Paul...

Bent vs. Oom - How to classify?

The ool-paul is the most bent of all pipes: the mouthpiece becomes ALMOST parallel to the bowl wall. A full bent is not the same as an oom: The shank is a lot bent, but not close to parallel with the bowl wall.

    Three Nuns

The sight of those Three Nuns containers made my mouth water!!! What a great blend. Used to be one of my great favourites, back in the day. WHAT is Mr Pease waiting to provide the real replica? Yum. An encouraging thought.

Should I give flake another chance?

I never rub flakes. If you want rubbed tobacco, but ready-rubbed. I like the slow intensity of flakes. I just fold the flake and stuff it in the pipe. This makes it hard to light. You have to persevere with a number of matches until it catches on. Unrubbed, though, it smokes slower and cooler...

    Changing Tastes

I think it is something that happens to many smokers. Something to do with body chemistry, perhaps. I used to smoke only Latakia blends, and now I never do. I'm a Virginia-and-Périque man now. Who know if it will last?

    What are you smoking?

Peterson's Irish Oak, in a Ben Wade briarwood calabash.

    House of Commons Snuffbox

Few people know that the same is true in both houses of the US Congress: a large snuff box is made available to members, free. I would LOVE to know which type or brand of snuff is provided, and by whom!

    Suff boxes?

I have three antiques (one of them my great-grandmother's) and a couple of nice modern ones from the Sheffield Exchange. But I never use them. I either keep the snuff in the original container OR use a pillbox from the pharmacy. They sell quite fine ones. Sillem's in Germany is the only silver...
