Then it is definitely okay.

At some point I'll update the list of guns. It's gotten a bit longer lately.

Nonsense. I hadn't shot the gun in a good 15 years. Time to give someone else the chance. Not a lot of those made and 50+ years ago at that.

PostSubject: Re: New purchases   New purchases - Page 5 EmptyWed May 08, 2013 5:24 am

It is a pretty gun. Russ Antoine was a famous stock maker. He had a tent on the line at the Grand every year. He was a Methodist from Cedar Rapids, IA so not a barrel of laugh but you went to his house to be fitted, if it wasn't at the Grand. Really nice folks. Fellow midwesterners that the Eastern folks view over noses.

Really fancy woods. Mine was in the middle grade of that but that's pretty darn figured. He'd put a ebony and other woods on the gun to mark it his; but for this one I had him leave it off. I took it to a turkey shoot the last time I shot it and that was kind of funny. People didn't recognize the work but knew it was custom. I hadn't been on the circuit for several years and nobody knew who I was. It was the Optimist shoot and my dad was a member which was why I went. We shot the stations and 3 of us were perfect. Moved back to 27 and I just smoked everything out of the house -- one of those days. Afterwords the clique of turkey shoot pros was over in the corner and sneaking peaks my way. I had 'em shakin' in their boots. Took my turkey and didn't shoot again for the money alternative. This daddy's boy doesn't tempt providence.

The Remington evidently was too expensive to produce and they dropped it after a couple of years while you were lucky to see one still in a shop and not spoken for. It was the only US trap gun with split barrels. Less expensive than the Eyetalian ones.

It has a nice fitted case -- actually two. One is the hard, fitted and the other the traditional, English, leather leg-of-mutton case. The last I got from a guy that got it at the old VL&A when it was still the premier sporting goods store to the rich til Abercrombie bought them out. In high school I used to go there and drool. My buddy and I would go every so often and look at the Purdys and such. Who couldn't use an extra elephant gun from England, right? And the fly rods -- OMG. My buddy and I would wear suit because we could get served at Trader Vic's in them. Mai Tai anyone? Good times.

I have no idea what to ask. I saw a S&W 22 heavy barrel match in the case at the store and it was 3x what I'd paid for mine and I think that was the current retail. Prices just don't make sense or fixable based on my knowledge.

Oh I forgot to mention one thing about the old Ruger. It really was a neat smoking pipe. At dusk, the muzzle blast beat the 4th of July for show. It would create a fireball at the muzzle about the size of a dinner plate. The 256 Win is a necked down 357 with a 60 gr Hornaday or such. I think my best load was with 2400 and it came right up to the bullet. Lot of energy coming down that "smoking pipe."

I still have a 100 yd group somewhere of 3 overlapping smaller than the normal cloverleaf. My wrist was on a sand bag on the bench. It had a 3x scope on it. What makes me sad is the nice handloads left behind. I'd necked 357's and turned the neck to make some nice brass and worked up some nice loads. Oh well, maybe in the next life I won't have to worry about liability passing along handloads.

Well, that was way to long an answer but you know us old goats.

I was looking on gun broker to see what prices were. They had 2 rem. a 300 and 332. Both were over a $1000. your could bring a real premium. I bet you would like this place. A lot of real nice stuff on there for bird and trap.

That isn't the model. I did see the leg of mutton (new) from your outfitter for $275. Ebay has my Browning hard case for a buy it now at $350. $350? OMG. The prices are ridiculous. I think I gave almost $50 for it and that was thought a lot for a case. It was that much because it was a Browning.

No Im not trying to rip nobody off. I have of latley looked for project guns. You know the ones that need some TLC. Its kinda a hobby to tinker and pretty back up old mistreeted guns. Usually can find them for a deal, Then a few parts. Furniture refinished, Maybe some new blueing. And wah-la. Ive been looking for a old marlin, In 32-40, or maybe a 38-55. for some long range lobbing. since the cartriges arent made for the high valocity flat projectiled. Makes just playing around long distance fun and a test of skill.

Well, that was said in jest. The one I pointed to was was a Mod 3200. It was also from the 1 of 1000 series and mine isn't. I was just jerking your chain.

I redid my grandfathers Stevens 22 pump like you mention. I have another I started on but never finished -- a little falling block 22. If I run across the parts, I'll give it to you. I saw the smaller parts in a cigar box a while back. Otherwise, it'd likely get thrown out when I move on. I know I'll never get around to finishing it.

I was talked into buying a 3200 skeet w/ choke tubes when they first came out. The guys were ashamed to be seen with someone shooting a lowly 870 Very Happy.
I picked up my score by a few birds but a few years later I needed cash for a divorce, sold it, and went back to the 870 out of necessity.
Surprisingly I then shot better with the pump, but that 3200 was a great solid gun, state of the art, and worth every penny. Prices are out of sight now as with everything and my buddy won't sell it back to me,,, lol!

I was never much of a skeet shooter. Truth told, I wasn't that great at trap either. I think my longest run was 175 and days like that were rare. A bunch of us would get together at a shoot almost every weekend in the summer. I used the 3200 almost exclusively for trap doubles. The only decent skeet range in our area was on the outskirts of Milwaukee and I use to stop there when I was there for business.

I have a earlier manufacture Mod 12 for singles with custom wood. It actually has two set of barrels. The one I used is a 32" with Herb Orr choke. The second barrel came from a beater I picked up with a bad/pitted receiver but cherry barrel. It had a 34" barrel which is kinda rare and I sent it in to have a tapered rib put on it. Not sure why but it was something to do, I guess.

Most of the people I shot with then are gone. That's what really sucks about getting older.

I shot competitive pistol before the trap bug. Still have my heavy-slide national match 1911 and a S&W 22 with two sets of barrels -- guess I am prone to that. But, the only one I could find to buy had the long barrel and the heavy one matched up better with the 1911.

Well, ran my mouth too long again. Take care.

Screw them, the Rem 870 is a great shotgun. Laughing It ain't the ship, it's the captain!

The trap club here won't let me bring my Saiga 12 for clays, the elitist sissies. New purchases - Page 5 710492

I remember watching a show about that Vegas Pawn shop. They went to a trap range over some made up argument. I seem to remember the lazy, fat kid shot a Saiga 12. I think he came in last. Not inferring anything, mind you. Suspect

Oh, yeah. The grumpy old man came in first. Now, him I do identify with. Rolling Eyes

Talk about your elegant shot gun, let me break out my mossberg 500s. Tough and still working better than when they was new. Got a 12 and a 20 gauge. Kind of the his and hers thing.

The 19" barrel Saiga 12s aren't hunting guns. But they are a whole lotta awesome.

I'm shocked the fat kid pointed the barrel in the right direction--might have had something to do with it. Laughing
