Actually, it doesn't have to. Newspapers are dying, but there's no reason why the art form of comics can't remain as popular as ever...or even more popular.
Case in point: I take it that Pearls Before Swine
is a newspaper comic. But I had never heard of it before this thing with Bill Watterson came up. Why? Because I don't read any newspapers. (Never mind why; that's another story.)
There was a time when newspapers were the main pipeline of information, but that was back in the days before radio, TV, and now the Intertubes. Many newspapers had morning and evening editions...and sometimes even special editions. But those days are long gone.
The point is that the only reason I even know about Stephan Pastis' comic is onna counta the Internet. So, the art form doesn't have to die. It just has to make the transition to a different medium.
