CHANTERELLES!!! Empty
PostSubject: CHANTERELLES!!!   CHANTERELLES!!! EmptySun Nov 30, 2014 2:09 am

Went out with my better half today, (just us, no kids), to a favorite spot of ours and picked two grocery bags full of golden chanterelles and a quart or two of hedgehogs as well. Took my 20ga. just in case I was forced to shoot a ruff grouse or two in self defense. Didn't see any grouse, but didn't really mind since the woods were cool and quiet, and damp from the rain (which seemed to stop just for us and didn't start again till we were back in the truck), and I was in the environment I love the best with the person I love the best. Walking out, wife suggested we sit a spell on the edge of the old logging road over looking the creek, and I fire up my pipe. Sitting there with her, enjoying the stillness of the trees and the sound of the creek, with a pipe full of Peter Stokkebye's Optimum..it was if God reached down from heaven and patted me on the head, saying "Good Boy Bill".

Superb Fumus. I used to pic these when I worked in the Highlands of Scotland. If I recall correctly we had to be very careful as there was the 'false chanterelle' that was quite poisonous. The real macoy was divine though. They could fetch a packet too if you were that way inclined. Sounded like a great day Sir!

Aye, that it was Stick. That it was.
We also have the false or scaly chanterelles around here as well, but (to my eye at least) the ones around here don't look enough like the good ones to be a danger. Same basic shape but much larger and darker orange, and of course scaly looking on the top of the cap. Never heard if they were kill you dead poisonous or just really unpleasant make you wish you were dead poisonous. Either way, I don't mess with them. Nor do I mess with any members of the Amanita family.
Fatman, surprised you dont have chanterelles in your neck of the woods, but if I can get some more before they freeze and turn to slime I could maybe send a few your way. I dry em for storage and then my other half reconstitutes them in white wine, or whatever stock she happens to be working with. Her chanterelle risotto is lay down and scream, push the elk medallions to the side of the plate, good.

I'm very envious, I just love Chanterelles but don't know anything about picking mushrooms. Well only what I've read in books which isn't enough information to actually trust picking any. I always wanted to learn from someone experienced but never did. So sadly I get mine at the grocery or by the plate at a restaurant when in season. Congratulations to you Brother!
