I own 3 styles of pipes made from European pear wood. Once you break them in you should get an enjoyable smoke. I break them in at a slower pace than a briar. Basically the same was I break in a Cob. Just don't overheat the bowl until you build an even cake and your good to go.
Personal preference, I don't care for pipes made from American pear wood.
