Antler Tamper

I've been wanting to carve some pipe tampers from white tail antler, and I finally finished one! The main body was turned on a lathe, using a rotary tool for the rough shaping. The scoop/blade was shaped freehand, then the whole thing was sanded then polished to a high gloss It's about 3"x0.5"x0.5". It reminds me of the texture of onyx, but with the warmth of antler!

Welcome aboard. It’s great that our newest member does a show n’ tell right off the bat. Looks really good.

It's a great little tamper I realized, however, that the curve of the scoop is more appropriate for a lefty than a righty (I'm a righty). It works beautifully, but I turn my wrist out to scoop out the bowl rather than turning it in. I think that element was dictated by the natural curve of the antler.

I’ve never worked with antler before. I think mine is a piece of an old elk shed - the tine was thick. It was very was tough to cut. For the end piece, I used a small piece of horn left over from some razor scales.
