I found a nice calabash at a local antique shop for $40. I didn't have a way to store it without laying it on it's side.
So I built a calabash pipe rest from red oak.

Wow. If you have some kind of replicator or blueprint you could make these in quantity and sell them on eBay or to B&M pipe shops. Great design.

Nice job, and thanks for the idea. My stand retired to the dump a few years ago.

This is the first chess board I've made. It was sort of an experiment.

I think the next one I'll have a mother of pearl pipe made to inlay right in the middle where the center squares meet. What you think?

The squares are maple and Walnut. There's no exotic woods available locally so I made the band by laminating Oak, red Poplar and Walnut.

Nice board, makes me want to start playing chess again.
I suck at it, but I enjoy the game.
I guess I really never had the time to study on the strategy VS just moving the pieces.
I never really knew how bad I sucked until I played chess with some of the "regular customers" at the county jail.
Some of them dudes musta had a PhD in chess.
