That's an old school Brit original. Pedigree without the pomp.

Looks like Lucifer nabbed it, given the sixes in the final bid.

Heh! Looks like the devil scored a deal or made a deal.

PeeDee knows.

So does Mr. E.

& Mumbles.

And a few other gentlemen of experience & taste.

 66 freaking dollars ! :affraid:

:face:

A few years ago you could nab a Lowes for that kind of money, then the word got out. Barlings didn't always command the kind of money you see today, nor did many Charatans. Same thing. This pipe will clean up nicely, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it sells for three times that, three years from now.

Charatan always considered Ben Wade (Leeds) as their only real competitor.

:face:

Anybody see what vintage GBDs are going for nowadays? :affraid:

Dayum!

These are every bit as good as any Brit pipe of the period.

Most people aren't even aware there was a Wade family era. Unfortunately, the image of being a Charatan second is what has stuck in people's minds. Not bad for the value, but nothing to do with the Leeds pipes.

Anyhow, with that said, it seems like the cat's out of the bag already. Starting price on a similar pipe is $90:

Is this pipe really worth more than $66, I don't have a lot of knowledge about the value of these pipes, but the condition to me looks bad, the top of the bowl and the stem has been sanded, and the picture of the inside of the bowl looks to be as tho the draft hole went to deep and started to gouge the outside wall of the tobacco chamber and also in the same pic it makes it look like the draft hole is high, and at the stem shank junction looks a little funky as tho it might be a replacement stem, or maybe they were taken apart and buffed separately ?

or again am I just being to picky? LOL

You're picky!

If you look at the second auction referenced in this thread, that's pretty much what the first pipe will end up looking like after a restoration. It looks a little rough, but it's old. You're talking (if memory serves) pre WWII golden age of British pipe making. It's a romance and nomenclature pipe, a collector.

Your observations are right on. The stem does look funky, and the bowl has a major indentation from over from over zealous pipe cleaner usage.
And if shinypipes only charged $95 for the other pipe, then the $66 doesn't seem too far out of line, as he always over values his pipes.

Thanks for the education Fellas, the history of the brand would definitely attract the serious collector, I am not into the historical type of collecting yet, I am still at the "that's a nice looking pipe" collector stage :)
