Every once in a while I get the yen for some new steel.  And I use the term “yen” on purpose.  The first one is definitely related to Japan.

Number One:  SOG VULCAN VG-10 SAN MAI STEEL MADE IN SEKI, JAPAN, 3.5 INCH.
This just has to be the prettiest blade I’ve seen in a long, long time.  The laminated steel of the blade has a VG10 core with I think 420 on the outside. Notice the lam line along the edge of the blade.  Rockwell on the VG10 is about 59. They make two sizes in this knife...this is the larger of the two.

Number Two:  ONTARIO RAT MODEL 1 FOLDER, 3.5" D2 BLADE STEEL, BLACK CARBON FIBER HANDLE.
There are few knives more classic than Ontario’s line of RAT knives.  There are fixed and folder models in a huge assortment of sizes and scale colors, etc.  Mine is going to be D2 steel with carbon fiber. Oooo...dressy!  Definetly a Saturday night item.  But Ontario’s D2 on this puppy has a great rep for lasting and lasting.

I thought it would be fun to show each of these knives with their “little brother”.

And, of course, in dress black...

I've got a RAT 1 in D2. Just about the best budget pocket knife on the market. I carried an SOG for years, but when the pocket clip broke I couldn't ever get SOG to send me another one.

Nice scores, BH.

Did you ever contact a knife repair specialist?

Those are splendid looking. I have my trusty Opinel, and I never get an itch for more.

Yes, cracking looking tools. I particularly like the profiling of the blade of the first knife; looks like it took a bit of work to get it to look like that.

Like Zanaspus, I have a few trusty Opinels and a much treasured Victorinox Swiss Army knife that I bought in '84. It's accompanied me on many adventures around the world and I'd be gutted if I'd lost it.

What would you be using yours for Mr BH?

Sure did.... Received an email that said they'd get me another one in 2 weeks. It's been over a year. It's not that expensive or great of a knife, so I wasn't heartbroken, just moved on.

I had a Rat-1 and loved it, definitely good value for the money, ended up gifting it to a coworker though as I didn't use it as much after getting out of warehouse work.

SAK Alox Pioneer is my current carry.

Just got the Rat 1 D2 Carbon Fiber in. I can easily see what all the fuss is about. Factory flat ground edge I’d insane and it’s like a tank. Very rewarding. I do really love the SOG Vulcan San Mai as well. Totally different beasts but both completely succeed at their intent. Glad I did this.
