As I've recently ordered a "dress pipe" it occured to me that most of the formal venues which at one time allowed smoking no longer do so. The only one I can think of is military 'dining outs' and special ceremonies in which the smoking lamp is lit and scotch (or Bourbon) is broken out. Of course the expected smoke of the evening is usually a cigar but a pipe would certainly be appropriate.

Can anyone think of a contemporary formal venue other than the above where smoking a nice pipe would be allowed?

I know in Missouri a lot of the really nice hotels and casinos and restaurants usually have a smoking section but I don't think you would consider that formal some of the gambling establishments I would consider to be formal

Harrah's in Cherokee NC allows it on the casino floor but not the poker room, which is unfortunate since that is usually where I am. If I get busted out I take a break and go to the main floor have a smoke and play some blackjack or baccarat and then head back to the poker room.

In Raleigh NC there is a steak house that has been around forever call The Angus Barn. Has an extensive wine collection. If you ask for the meat locker you dine in the old meat locker area that allows smoking. They expanded it with outside seating and have a fire pit.

Rey's in Cary NC now has outdoor patio you are allowed to smoke on as well. Rey's is another steakhouse and use to be a Ruth Chris's location. The owner Rey is a cigar smoker and it irked him to no end the stupid NC laws that banned him from allowing smoking in the restaurant. So he added on a spot outside so you can. Great guy and great food!

Just a dang minute there, GC!! The Angus Barn was built around the time I attended NC State :D So that make me "forever" + 20 :?: :?: :?: And it is a great place to eat and drink  FTRPLT

Well I moved here in '83 so it has always been around so might as well be forever. But since you are forever + 20 maybe you answer the physics question of what happened before the big bang? :lol!:
