That pipe I bought on impulse for $25 is turning out nice! I "tested" my three pipes (remember I am new to this) and decided that this one was the best. Smokes and tastes great but I assumed it was a real cheap-o. It was in a case with a lot of mixed pipes and a local "head" shop. But as I realized it smoked the best of my three, I looked closer. It's stamped "P.T.M. Greece". Google tells me it's from Amadeus Pipes, Greece. From Wikapedia:

"Our company was founded 28 years ago by eight highly skilled crafstmen with experience in briar wood cutting for over forty years. ACHAIKI-AMADEUS S.A. has a field experience of three generations in briar wood production, both for large pipe factories around the world as well as artisan pipe makers. P.T.M. Amadeus goal is to produce high quality briar pipes in prices that no one can afford not to have one in their rotation. P.T.M. Amadeus pipes are made of natural Mediterranean briar wood that has been processed in the traditional way in our factory. Greek briar wood is been internationally recognized for its quality, nice grain, a sweetness when it has been cured properly, as well as its long life as a pipe when been handled relatively well. During all phases of production, from the root to the block, to the final product, the men and women of Amadeus work diligently in making one of the best pipes in the market." https://pipedia.org/wiki/Amadeus_Pipes

They're listed here with gorgeous pics:

$25 you say Michael? By the looks on that link they seem to be fine in all ways. Guess you scored here bro. Perhaps our Greek brother Sid can comment?

When you can post pics please do so.

G.Minetos aka "Makis" the owner of the company is one of the most well-known briar providers all over the world. Many brands buy briar from him, work in the shape, paint it put a mouthpiece plus their logo and they sell the pipe in a much more higher price. The same with many individual carvers [hand made pipes] in Germany,USA etc.
You can still find some Amadeus pipes but the factory now is focused in briar distribution.

I am not related with the owner, he doesn't knows me, i just provide some informations for educational purposes. ;)

Here's a bad pic of the pipe (and me). The picture seems to dull (matt) the shine of the pipe. You might be able to tell that the silver ring doesn't exactly fit, it's a bit small. I think this may have been a manufacture's error which explains how I got it cheap?  However the pipe practically smokes itself, very easy draw with rich, dense smoke, doesn't get hot - comfortable!
Thanks for the background information. One of the things I love about the hobby is the pipe itself, so knowing more adds to my appreciation and enjoyment.

Cheers Michael
(from Seattle, where yes, it's raining today).

And that's what it's all about after all Michael. And it's raining here too!

I love sitting on the back deck when it rains. But the wind makes smoking a hassle.

I bought a $35 Rusticated pipe from Amadeus. It's varnished, I don't like that; but it smokes surprisingly well, considering the price.
And, at that price, it's great when I'm outside working on the yard. :D
