Twenty years ago, because there's an elementary school at the end of the cul-de-sac on my block, I'd have 100 kids knocking on the door. Over the years and the school closing for many years, the number of trick or treaters dwindled to a handful. Last year, because of Covid, I kept the house dark and didn't give out treats.
Now, the once vacant school is a St. Paul public Chinese language immersion school. It's a magnet school and kids are bussed in from all over the city. I'm debating whether to run to a local grocery and buy treats or keep the house dark again. I usually buy stuff that I like to eat myself; big mistake!
