I have a Savinelli sherwood model 811 that Im trying to date
It has an oval shank a turtle shell design and it is not a filter pipe like mos Savs
Any help will be apreciated

Lots of luck, Dave.

Like Stanwell, they've made so many different lines, for so many years, that keeping track of all them and when they were made would be a job for a deeply specialised collector.

Your best bet might be to start scrounging for old catalogues.

:face:

I have been looking on line at catalogs
Most 811's were the balsa filter pipes

Thats what makes this hobby fun the search lol

Dave....Your Savinelli dating question piqued my curiosity, so I checked my Savinelli SherWood Rock Briar. Mine is a 512; square-shank, saddle pot. Markings are (from the left on the bottom of the pipe) Sher Wood over Rock Briar; then the Savinelli "S" in a shield with the inverted "V" on top; then the shape #; then Savinelli over Italy stamped crossways, not parallel, across the shank. My pipe was bought in 1966. Don't know if this helps; but that's all I know!!!! I will say that this pipe has always been one of my favorite smokers. Smokes cool and dry every time; very light weight, just a super briar!! FTRPLT

Thank you ftrplt that gives me a neighbor hood to look in

This one cleaned up nice and smokes like a dream

I lean towards pipes made before the 70's they seem to have better workmanship and the briar seems better

Strange... I generally smoke my pipes rather than date them, but if you insist here are some tips:

- Go up to it with confidence, introduce yourself and make some small talk
- Ask it out after a few minutes, when it is comfortable with you
- Be direct, but neither too pushy nor too shy
- Pick it up at the time you said you would
- You may be asked to come inside and meet the pipe's carvers before taking it out
- Once out on the date, be respectful - treat the pipe as you would want another boy to treat your sister
- At the end of the date, if all goes well, it might even let you give it a little puff on the stem! Enjoy!
- Remember to call the next day to tell it what a great time you had, and ask it out for another date if that is your intention

Hope that helps :)

Man! Imagine the pipe hook-ups you'd get if you dated some one who's family owned a pipe company? how cool would that be?

I knew I was doing something wrong
Thanks lol

Any time Dave. And remember if things get serious, use one of those rubber things on the tip of the stem.

This brings a whole new meaning to the term "Handling a pipe" Or "Fondling a pipe."
