It's all you can do. I usually say this: People's assessments/opinions of any given situation isn't typically a problem, it's the conclusion and action they take that becomes problematic.

Know your neighbors, be familiar with your surroundings and know when something is truly wrong without putting yourself in harms way--before or after the incident.

Awareness is essential to all things.
