I've got a Reg # Stanwell Stack billiard that I can load with Luxury Navy Flake (unrubbed) in Louisville and dump the dottle when I cross into PA on I-80... :D :D :D

Regular mixtures don't do as well..Cairo clocks in about the 2hr mark.

JJ,

Our own "pipemaker" aka Mike Brissett makes some huge pipes at a fair price point. He's also a stand up dude to boot. I own one of his and smoke it regularly! Nothing but kudos!

The hang-up about these HUGE pipes is the fact that most folks don't have enough time to smoke an entire bowl! Seriously, I remember having a monsterous sized L'Anatra Gigante. It would take over two hours to smoke the damn thing. Who has that sort of time in this day and age? I would bet that the sales of big ass pipes have been on the decline since the economy bottomed out

Also, if you like flakes they're of absolutely no use to you at all especially if you don't rub them out. A bowl of Navy Flake in that L'Anatra I mentioned would likely take over a week.
Actually, you're assumption is incorrect. With the bottoming out of the economy, people have less expendable money, so people are staying home more. Because of that we're having to find ways to occupy us beyond just watching TV. So relaxing, smoking a pipe is a pretty good practice, and there has been an up-tic in pipe sales the past year. Even though pipes have more up-front costs, the actual smoking of a pipe is cheaper than cigarettes. So there has also been more college students or college age students taking up pipe smoking as well.

And honestly, isn't taking one to two hours to smoke part of the allure of the pipe?

I would think some of those jumbo pipes would take much longer than two hours. I couldn't do it in two.

I was getting ready to mention him but Dock beat me too it and I couldn't agree more!

This is a giant Horn that Mike Brissett (Pipemaker) custom made for me that is an easy 2-3 hour smoke. It is the most perfectly smoking giant pipe that I have ever put fire to.

Does Mike have a website? Or commisions only? I really need to look into his pipes.

I would recommend that you contact Mike personally. I believe most of what he is doing these days is by request. No disrespect to Mike at all but his website does not show his best work and that is only because he is one of the most humble individuals on the planet. He is a master of creating a perfectly executed commisioned piece.

Dodge - are you happy with that Savinelli EX? That might be a viable option.

Let me throw a word in for Radice.
I bought a Rind Poker w/ a twin bore that holds steady for at LEAST 2 hours.
You can pick one up used for under $100 and unsmoked for the mid-100's.
Also one of my best smoking pipes.

Very happy, great smoker. From the first bowl I packed fresh out of the box it smoked like a champ. The only downfall is its a bit heavy being rusticated and large so if you're looking for a clencher this isn't the one. On occasion I'll side bite it and I can hold it there pretty easily but trying to balance it with your front teeth is a challenge. I doubt you'll find a better pipe for under $50 with this size bowl.

That's a nice 616 bowl. Too bad about the faux-Peterson stem and filters. It will cost another $86 to mail it back to Savinelli to have them install a decent stem on the pipe. You'd have quite the challenge getting a 2 hr smoke with this pipe.

That said, I'm tempted just because I like Sav 616's!

In that case, I would get the Hercules.

If you want to sit on the porch and freak out the neighbors, a dry system pipe may be for you:

Running the risk that the fellow in the video may be member of this board... I have always regarded utube videos of people smoking as nothing short of soft core porn. The only thing that this fellow's neighbours would think would be that he is puffing up a storm cloud. Pipe smokers who saw him would pity his tongue and\or the roof of his mouth. To each his own.

Actually, I'm in a multicultural neighbourhood. Sitting on the porch with a hookah may be an ice-breaker!
