Two topics in this thread: Jazz and music format

I did a bunch of chores around the house today and I'm tired, just sitting with big headphones on listening to Miles Davis Kind of Blue and having a lazy sunday night. I started surfing the web and thought "hey, let's see if some of those guys at the forum like jazz."

So, do you? if so, what style? share some names of performers you like.

My personal favorite style is beebop, I love the "Masters" like Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Buddy Tatte, Dollar Brand, Cannonball Adderley, and many others. I really like Dixieland and New Orleans too, been listening to The Preservation Hall Jazz Band quite a bit.

Hard bop would be a close 3rd, I tend to favor the more aggressive rhythms of beebop but I've been wowed by some hard bop performers. Brandford Marsalis is trippy, Steve Turre is actually quite aggressive and I've been listening a lot.

As you can see, I like a lot of brass.

I've been listening, since childhood, but my knowledge is severely limited to American performers, either local bands or the big shots. I'd love to venture into the european stuff but don't even know where to begin.

In terms of format, I grew up with CD's and Vinyl. I've not been able to warm up to the MP3, nothing against it, just not for me. Plus, it's cool to go to a record store (I'm fortunate to have a couple nice ones in my area) and browse and talk crap with the people there. One thing I've found really useful to experiment with new artists (or when I'm just plain lazy) is a wifi radio, cool to just crank it up and listen to either custom radio stations on Pandora (on the wifi radio) or public radio stations from all over the U.S.

I'd love to hear from those of you who like Jazz, especially those of you who can help me broaden my horizons with some european jazz.

I listen to KCSM out of the San Francisco bay area, excellent jazz station. Used to be I could only hear it when I was working in the area but now they stream live and even have their own app for streaming on your mobile device. I can open the app on the iPad and have jazz playing in the background while I play on the internet.

I like a lot of classic jazz, tend to prefer piano jazz. Dave Brubek, Vince Guaraldi, Kieth Jarrett, etc..

Oh yeah, piano jazz is great too. My local public radio station has a program Saturday mornings dedicated to piano jazz, I listen to it almost every Saturday morning while doing stuff around the house.

Funny you mention KCSM, I found it yesterday and added it to my Wifi radio, I haven't had a chance to listen to it but maybe tonight I will.

I ran a speaker extension cable from the computer out to the covered patio. Now I can listen to JAZZRADIO.COM while smoking. Many venues to choose from. Smooth jazz is my favorite.
