I just read about Mark Twain’s method of packing his pipe via Rudyard Kipling. He carried a sack of tobacco around with a pipe bowl in it. E carried the stem in his vest pocket. The bowl jiggled around the tobacco, thus filling itself. When he wanted to smoke, he just pulled the bowl (with the shank surely) out of the bag, stuck the stem in; and smoked.

Anyone hear or tried this method?

I doubt it. However, even if he did I think it a bad idea. Frequently removing and reinserting the stem will ultimately loosen it. I try to rarely remove the stems on my pipes.
