I was fortunate enough to score 2 tins of this back when it was available and had actually forgotten about it until I was doing some closet cleaning a couple of days ago.... my question is... do I age them both or open one now? I know Virginias are supposed to get better with age... I loved the McClelland Virginias and miss their availability so I'm on the fence...

This is what I do with 100gram tins these day.

I get three small Ball jelly jars. 4 ounce I think. Open the tin and weigh out three 30 gram portions into the jars, label and date them, put them away.

The remaining ten grams gets smoked first. If I want more, I can open another small portion. That allows some of it to age under glass and helps meter out the consumption.

My tuppence.

I’d open both, marking them carefully as to which is which, then jar them tightly. Send both by Priority Mail to “Blackhorse Tobacco Blending and Grading, LLC”. I’ll send you the address privately. I’ll also send you a graded analysis as to which one is the best for storage/aging and which should be used sooner.

No...no...don’t thank me. I’m here for ya.

I opened one of them.. hell, I could kick the bucket tomorrow so...really nice Virginia... I like the jelly jar idea...sure does make me miss McClelland....I'm not a long time smoker so I have to ask... are there any other blends that are reminiscent of their Virginia's?

Solani Va Flake and Silver are phenomenal tobaccos and I have no idea why they don't get more love. The Flake Va can stand toe to toe with any of the McClelland blends I have smoked. imho

Yeah...love that Silver Flake. A great blend.

Re my comparison to McClelland VA blends: I’m not saying there are no other blends out there AS GOOD AS they are. I meant there are really no other blends out there that are like them in terms of aroma, flavor, etc. They’re unique. Heck, there are VA blends I like better than the late great McC...notably among them are some made by the Brit blenders... the Gawith boys. Others too.

my vote: Open one and smoke the heck out of it. Enjoy and savor every puff while you're alive and able. Live each day like its your last! (or not)

Sounds like you did a good thing for yourself. Open one and save one. I never had any problems with McClelland tins rusting or losing their seal, so I wouldn't bother opening the sealed tin just to put it in a jar. Not sure if anyone said to do that, but I know some folks remove tobacco to age it in jars. I don't think that is necessary with McClelland.

I too didn't have 40th Ann. until after they closed. I was very impressed. I try not to think about it.

Speaking of tin quality...I wonder how much each tin cost them. Like just the container. They're lined, or coated if you will. Pull tab. Plastic lid. Were they a nickel? A dime? Two bits? More?

After reading this thread, I got a hankerin' for some 40th Anni. I have an extra can cellared and some in a jar. I put down my cob filled with Northwoods, popped open the jar of 40th and picked out a large bowled pot for the smoke. Mmm, good! After this bowl, I might just open up some C&D Red Flake and smoke it. I'm glad I have nothing else to do today!
