My daughter, a teacher, walked the picket line today. St. Paul teachers were set to go on strike, but there was a settlement. Minneapolis teachers salary schedule is significantly below St. Paul's, many surrounding towns, and many local charter schools. Minneapolis Public School system is overloaded at the administrative level with many administrators earning well into 6-figures. Paraprofessionals who work directly with students earn less than shelf stockers at the Mpls-St. Paul Walmarts and many of the parapros are degreed, but without a teacher's license. The strike could go on for a long time.
Here's something that confounds me. Eligible families get food stamps and Minneapolis-St. Paul has a free "No questions asked" food bank system. Yet it was announced that, "In Minneapolis a meal bag containing breakfast and lunch for all students will be available daily for pick-up, starting Wednesday."
