Certainly not seeking to wrest the title from Ozzie, but I'm in the midst of getting a new batch of blending components in. The are listed below...divided into two piles. What I'm going to try is to find a couple of decent Christmas recipes.

The two groups represent the components that will be a available to use...NOT the final specific ratios.

The blends I want to work towards will be a melange of Burley's, Red and Yellow VAs, Cigar Leaf, Turkish and maybe Perique...kind of like Patton's Oriental Dusk, Crossroads & Dark Horse. A very tall order.

Anyway, comments and advice are the whole point here, so chime in if you want.

Anyone asking me technical type questions will get a good laugh.

Again...the items listed below in the two groups are the components available to include in the blend. Might use three of four...or all.

___________________

Group A (could divide components in half and have two blend subgroups)

Uhle's Burley Mix
4 oz Blending Smyrna
4 oz Yellow Virginia
4 Oz C&D Chopped Cigar Leaf
2 oz East Carolina Ribbon,
2 oz Red VA Ribbon,
2 oz Red VA Cavendish
2 oz Longcut VA
2 oz C&D Granulated Perique

Group B

Uhle's Burley Mix
4 oz Blending Izmir
4 oz Yellow Virginia
4 oz C&D Chopped Cigar Leaf
2 oz East Carolina Ribbon,
2 oz Red VA Ribbon,
2 ozRed VA Cavendish
2 oz Longcut VA
2 oz C&D Granulated Perique

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those totals seem to add up to 22 ounces. Pretty big experimental batches there!

More guts than I have!

So...here we go. First of all, read the fine print. The list of potential components is a list of Tobaccos AVAILABLE for a blend. I'm not intending to use 22 oz in anything. (Also - the Uhle's Burley might equal a pound available for each A & B). I might end up using half the available tobacco...some specific items not at all. And that after initial trials and testing, which could take up half the available tobaccos on each side.

BH you have so many possible combinations. Makes one wonder where to start. I love this sort of experimenting and look forward to hearing the results. Though I've done s good bit of experimenting myself by mixing different blends or by adding Perique or Latakia to a blend, your method of using different varieties is what real tobacconist do. Carry on my friend. :)

Ah, yes, I should have worn my glasses. Sounds like a good time ahead!

Mad scientist time!

I posted these elsewhere but afterward realized DIY was the proper location.

I titled this thread with a "recipe heavy" description...so here goes...

The nutty taste of the burley with the sweetness of the virginia are enhanced and kicked up a notch by the addition of the perique. I find this to be an all day smoke. Almost a poor man's Escudo.

Now THIS is interesting...check it out Ozzie (you're the only one I know growing your own).

I don't think I've ever seen a "sauce" recipe before!

Yayladag Pipe Tobacco (blend and recipe)

This is the most wanted commercial pipe tobacco in Turkey and generally can not be found consistently in markets. Manufacturer may have some problems about distribution.

This blend contains Turkish tobaccos and a fire-cured tobacco (strain unknown).

Blend contains,

Strain ----------%
Yayladag -------40
Bitlis -----------24
Izmir -----------12
Fire-cured ------24

For casing/saucing,

Materials--------------------%
Diethylene glycol--------------2
Honey------------------------1
Pekmez *---------------------1
Sodium Nitrate---------------0.5
Sodium benzoate--------------1
Water------------------------ 6

*Pekmez is boiled grape juice. It's a medium viscous fluid not viscouse as honey resembles molasses. See the pic below.

BTW, you can find pekmez in some stores especially if you have a Turkish neighborhood. There are a lot of pekmez types like grape, carob, mulberry, etc.

1306462842932.jpg

Saucing mixture should be applied by spraying on the leaves. Blend should rest for a day to absorb the mixture.

For flavoring,

Materials-------------%
Maple syrup-----------0.15
Rum------------------0.10
Alcohol---------------0.65
Water----------------0.225

After spraying this mixture tobaccos should rest for a day again to absorb the fragrance.

Blend should be 14-15% humid for shredding.

Pekmez is what is found in Shisha (Hookah) tobacco........
Those can be pretty sticky!

I think it's like concentrated fruit essence. Here they dilute it and spray it on the leaf prior to cutting. I know all Burley and maybe all tobacco is treated in much the same way, by one kind of sauce or other. This recipe is one for some Turkish blend. Cigar Leaf prep is much the same.

If you buy blending tobaccos or already blended stuff, this has already been done. I'm sure many here know much more than I do about processing the leaf.

Well, there you go...... That sounds like an interesting blend and treatment. I'm not sure of what's about some of the additives, I'll check this out!

Great thread/post! Most excellent actually. Good show!

So, the thing that I really found fun was the blends using Gawith Lakelands. Now that never really occurred to me. Brilliant.

Got some of the blender's in today. Great aromas.

So just to get on the path here's a couple.

Interesting!

BH if you're interested I can post the recipe for the old Pall Mall casing. It's quite interesting to say the least.

Jim

Ok. Here it is for posterity and all that.

Pall Mall casing sauce. 9 drum yield

Cocoa. 185.4 lbs
Licorice Granuals. 137.7 lbs
Chocolate. 83.1 lbs
Invert Sugar Syrup. 1,986.0 lbs
Corn Syrup. 720.0 lbs
Propylene Glycol. 343.5 lbs
Glycerin. 388.0 lbs
Sodium Benzoate. 5.25lbs
Water. 300 lbs

Add cocoa to 300 lbs of water to make slurry. Add licorice granuals and chocolate and cook 10-15 minutes to dissolve. Then add remaining ingredients in order given. Bring to cooking temperature of 180 degrees F.

Hot liquid is to be divided equally into 9 open lined, metal, tight head drums. The net weight is to be adjusted to 526.1 pounds with hot water.

After adjusting weight the drums should be sealed tightly and labeled.

Other casing sauce recipes I have are as follows.

Simple cocoa casing

1 tablespoon cocoa powder
8 oz purified water
1/4 teaspoon glycerin
1 teaspoon honey

You can substitute 8 oz very strong coffee plus 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup for the water in the above recipe.

Choco, maple, honey, rum casing

1/2 square bakers chocolate
1 teaspoon maple syrup
1 1/2 teaspoon honey
1 oz rum of your preference
1 oz water

Heat liquids on stove. Grate chocolate into hot liquid. Filter. Soak leaves in casing for 24 hours at room temperature. Dry in oven preheated to 350 degrees turn off oven before you put tobacco in.

Japan Tobacco International casing sauce
For Export A Full Flavor Cigarettes. Treats 1 kg tobacco 30% burley 70% Virginia

22g glycerin
5g sodium carbonate
3g potassium sorbate
22g invert Syrup

Put all into a 500 ml jar and shake to combine. Add hot water to obtain 500 ml. Mix all into 1 kg tobacco and put into storage tote. Should be very moist to wet. Cover and heat. Float covered tub in hot water in bathtub. Refresh hot water every 2 hours and thoroughly mix the tobacco each time to ensure even heating of product. Refresh water in tub 3 times. 6 hours will give the carbonate time to work on freebasing the nicotine content of the tobacco. Dry in oven in batches. 1 inch layer of tobacco oven set to 120 degrees door left ajar, heat one hour or until top layer is crispy turn over and repeat. At this point put into new storage tub and add Turkish to your preference.

That recipe must treat a LOT of tobacco!!
If I remember correctly each drum was for a 1000kg of tobacco or something of that magnitude. The General rule is 10 ml or 2 teaspoons of casing treats 1 pound of tobacco.

Some general pipe blends to play with

40% Va bright
20% aromatic Turkish
25% Latakia
10% perique
5% black cavendish

30% air cured Va
30% oriental
35% Latakia
5% Black cavendish or dark air cured

20% light burley
20% dark burley
30% Turkish
30% Latakia

Balkan Sobrane clones

White
6 parts Latakia
2 parts Xanthi
4 parts lemon Va
3 parts red va
1 part dark air cured

Beige
6 parts Latakia
2 parts Prelip
4 parts lemon Va
3 parts red va
1 part dark air cured

Capstain Flake Mock

60% red va
30% bright va
10% perique

Needs 2 weeks in pressure mold at 113degrees then slice

I take no credit for any of the above blends just passing on things I've found that sound good.

1 tablespoon cocoa powder
8 oz purified water
1/4 teaspoon glycerin
1 teaspoon honey

This one is very similar to how I treat my Burley. Though more often I would use molasses in lieu of the cocoa powder and honey. The cocoa is a pretty popular component for others, I found it not to my tastes. I like using honey though.

Good info guys!
