For any of you North Carolina folks I got this in email today from our friends at Anstead Tobacco Company in Fayetteville.

Attention Anstead's Customers,

Right Now in the North Carolina General Assembly there is a "Smoking Ban" proposed for the entire state that would outlaw smoking in all places of employment including tobacco shops, restaurants, and bars without exception. House Bill 2 could ban smoking outright in Cigar Bars like IT'Z, The SpeakEasy, and countless other businesses in North Carolina.

Anstead's is asking all of its customers to contact your local North Carolina State Legislator and ask them not to support this overreaching legislation. Please go to the NC General Assembly Website (ncleg.net), e-mail your local representatives and tell them that this legislation has the potential to be an economic disaster for scores of North Carolina Small Businesses.

For customers who would like to read more on this issue, Representative Thom Tillis of Huntersville who is a key opponent of this bill authored a position paper on the legislation which can be read on his website. His paper underscores the dangers of House Bill 2 and provides examples of some potentially draconian applications of this proposed law. This bill is actually stricter than non-smoking bans in places like New York City and California.

Anstead's needs everyone's help fighting this bill which is a direct assault on a tradition that many of us cherish. We know that many of you enjoy smoking your pipe when you stop by the store or relaxing in a Cigar Bar in the evenings, but all of that is under threat. This same legislation came within five (5) votes of passing last year and the vote is expected to be even closer this year.

Thank you for your assistance fighting this circumstance which affects us all.

Please forward this to all of your smoking friends, we can still stop this legislation.

That's ridiculous. Why won't they just give it a rest. Banning smoking in a tobacco shop is just ludicrous. As if we don't approve

Oh you don't understand, deny "science" poor misguided creatures ... :p

You see, it's not just the risk of second hand smoke anymore, being delivered to those non smoking citizens who's very LIFE is endangered by anyone enjoying tobacco in the entire western hemisphere. "Science" has now proven beyond any doubt the risks of third hand smoke! Now any surface at all which has been exposed to the hazardous substances in combusted tobacco render that surface so toxic as to threaten humanity forever (until it has been legislated to death) and followed up by the reparation of fines levied, and haz-mat teams to decontaminate the area within a 100 mile radius of the effected area. :affraid:

More like the new leprosy! Your clothing (and one must presume eventually your contaminated body) your home, your vehicle and anything you contact (and thereby contaminate) are too hazardous for the general populace to bare.

In that case, we should have a new leper's colony of tobacco users! :pipe: :lol!:

Maybe we can reopen the one that used to be in Hawii! Molokai, IIRC.

Well, like I said, I could say something real ugly but this isn't the right category.

We'd be the happiest bunch of outcast ever assembled... Just as long as they didn't mess with our supply :pipe:

I was thinking the same thing... a nice sunny beach, some whisky in a Tiki mug, and a pipe. Hell, I'll smoke outside and only outside when it's 75 or higher every day.

(If only UPS Ground could deliver there, we'd be set.)

The State legislators here in Wisconsin are proposing a similar smoking ban.

To make matters worse, the Governors new budget proposes an increase on the tobacco tax. The cigar and pipe tobacco tax would be set at 70% of the retail price of the item. A tin of tobacco that now sells at $10 would cost $17 with the new tax, plus of course the 5.6% State sales tax. Tax upon tax upon tax?

This will pretty much signal the end of the B&M shops that have survived this long.
