Tri tips are a dead give away your from the west coast, they are very hard to find in the east, luckily there is a custom butcher shop near me that has them when I ask for them, nice cut of meat most don't know about! I used it to make beef on wick, they turned out awesome

Agreed. A really good piece of steak is kind of sacred for me. I rarely indulge, but when I do I don't want a lot of other flavors in the way.

Very true. The Tri-tip cut has been around for a really long time. I just read James Beard's simple foods which is a collection of quick culinary shorts he wrote for an American Airlines inflight magazine. He referenced the tri-tip several times. Of course he grew up in the Pacific Northwest. These shorts were written late in his career so we're talking 1970's. He preferred to grill on a clay hibachi. Funny how old becomes new again with the resurgence of the ceramic grills.
