I am somewhat new to pipe smoking. Recently I purchased an old Peterson pipe made around 1917 and a WDC Wellington. They seem somewhat small. My question - Have larger pipes become more popular today than they were 60 years ago or have I just happened to buy a couple of small pipes?

Just as you suspect, typical pipe size has increased over the years.

In the long run, dramatically so.

Pipes tended to be small, partially due to the fact that tobacco was very expensive. The tobaccos were very strong with a high nicotine content, and small bowls of tobacco went a long way.
