I was recently gifted a Sara Eltang Christmas pipe and have since smoked it twice. I was quite amazed at how well it smoked right out of the box not to mention charmed by it's appearance. Being this is the only one I have ever had I'm curious if anyone else has had positive or negative experiences with this line. I'm afraid I may be hooked but I would like to know that it's not just some fluke that this pipe is so good.

I would like to know what is up with all of the major Danish carver's wives coming out with their own line of pipes?

Its not his wife, its his daughters name...

From what I understand Eltang realizes that a lot of pipers don't start out with $1k pipes... BUT customers tend to return when they are happy.. Sara Eltang is an 'entry level' pipe into Dane Highgrades, designed to be 'affordable' step on the path to one of his incredible high grades.

If the other 'wife' you were refering to was Nana... Wrong again.. That is Sixtens Granddaughter trained at his bench, daughter of Lars.. A master pipe carver in her own right..basically following in the family business of making some of the most desired pipes on the planet...

btw, Nana's involvement in pipes anymore is low. She still makes some now and again, but more as a hobby. Her "real" job is as an industrial designer of furniture and so forth, with an emphasis on ergonomics.

Interesting how many excellent carvers are designers of non-pipe stuff by profession. Adam Davidson, Rolando Nagoita, Kent Rassmusen, etc.

An interesting side note.

Eltang was a Stanwell employee for quit sometime.. There is a chance that he laid hands on your Stanwells made before the early 80's.... A lot of Stanwell designs were bought off of Tom Eltang.. (Along with basically every Great Dane from Sixten Ivarsson to Jess Chonowitsch)

Another interesting fact about Stanwell is that most Danish makers have the company sandblast their pipes.. I'm unsure if Eltang does, but I am almost positive he buys briar from them. So I suppose you could call a Sara Eltang a extremely high grade Stanwell (wonder how many rocks will be thrown at me for that... Lol. )

I guess it's the artist nature and gifts... I notice John Crosby sells sketchings of pipes... some of the Canadian pipemakers are primarily artists to begin with and brought their talents to pipe-carving.

Yeah I knew that LL...

The truth of the matter with the Danish Governments Socialist tax structure it doesn't make sense for the Danes to carve much.... If you make 50,000 crowns a week they tax you down to 14,000.... If you make 5,000 crowns a week they susidize you up to 14,000 a week....

What's the point of 'over producing'? It would lower the rarity (and price) and not garner anymore dough for them...

My bad PB! I don't keep up with them so I just assumed "wife". Just the same it is a good marketing concept! Wife, daughter, granddaughter, aunt............

You know, that's a very interesting comment, and given the quality of the high end stanwells, the "chess pipes", I would say it makes a lot of sense to buy briar from Stanwell. Even their "run of the mill" pipes are almost always well grained with very few pits or fills.

She does some incredible work...and it seems she adds elements of pipes into her furniture as well.

You mean you asked a question actually expecting a response instead of rabbit chasing, side stepping, and a fierce debate about everything but what you asked?????????

Agreed. I'm a sucker for pokers and sitters. I haven't added any to my collection yet, but I will sooner or later.

I'm seriously considering trading a couple of my pipes to get another one.

I would advise waiting until the honeymoon was over before doing anything drastic.

The only other pipe that wowed me with it's initial smoking ability was one that pipemaker made for my birthday. The draw is like taking a breath.

I have a couple pipes that are nice but I don't smoke very much so I may contact smokingpipes.com and see if I can finagle a deal.
