I always have some quality Lavazza decaf on hand but rarely drink decaf. The last two nights, however, instead of having a cocktail with my last bowl of the day, before going to bed, I've made myself a decaf espresso of about 4 oz. to have with my smoke. For two consecutive nights, I've awakened about 2:30 am for an urgent cleanout. Is there something in the decaffeinating process that might be a powerful laxative? I'd hate for that to happen if I were entertaining a female companion. (Oh, Geez...I can picture it now.)

I believe there are a couple of ways the decaffeinate coffee. One is water decaffination (is that a real word? It is now), and chemical, and I'm sure there are other ways as well. I don't really know the exact process or chemicals they use. I don't know which process Lavazza uses.

Coffee has some qualities of a laxative.

It must be the coffee itself, because I believe caffeine is a diarrhetic. Not sure if that’s the right spelling, but it means it makes you need to pee. I’m not certain I’ve ever had a cup of decaf, so I’ve no personal knowledge otherwise.
