While out and about I was pondering the issue with oxidation and stems, There has got to be a easy inexpensive way,

Although I have a buffer and wheel I wanted to try to find a method using only a product, cloth and hand buffing,

I am a big fan of using a existing product for a new purpose, I sought out a polish which claim to fame was the removal of oxidation from plastic.

Plastic headlight lens cleaner was my pick, Now also finding interest in the "Magic Eraser" for its claim of cleaning I chose to combine the 2 products,

Using just a small dab ( size of a kidney bean ) I put on the sponge and using in line strokes began to clean the stem, then just random rubbing it worked like a champ! using only light pressure the oxidation came off quick,

Now I probably spent less than 2 minutes with impressive results but continued for a few more just to be thorough after that used a soft cloth to clean it and them some cleaner wax and a quick hand polish.

The results were pretty good, (pictures included here) Now had I spent more time maybe included some power buffing the results may be fantastic, and I will do that later, main goal was to find a way to clean stems for those whom don't have or want to use power tool methods,

Total cost less than 10 bucks about 6 for the polish (Meguiars PlastX 10 OZ ) and 3.50 for the sponges at Walmart, But really I'm betting any old sponge or soft cloth would have worked fine.

Now it don't shine like a new stem due to a few deeper bite scratches only a buffer would take out, but for less than 10 minutes work its a good start. hope the pictures are clear enough to show the good results.

Hope this method will help anyone out there needing to clean some stems, :D

Looks like it did a fine job, congrats!
My only concern would be the chemical make up of he polish used. Many automotive polishes might contain toxins. Though I am familiar with Maguires, as a company, I am not familiar with the product you named.
Hope all goes well.

I've been finishing with Meguiars plastic polish since I started refurbing pipes. Unfortunately, I found without the soaking/sanding, and only plastic polish, the oxidation returns rather quickly. But, they look good quick, that is for sure.

As far as toxins, yes it has petroleum distillates in it , as do the stains used on a pipe and the varnish used to seal a pipe, as many cleaners we use for other things,

Stems being a hard reasonabley inpermable surface, As in using any chemical if we exercise caution and allow drying time and cleaning a surface after we have used a chemical on it.

Most stem polish out there is not meant to be ingested, So if we take care and remove the residue I feel no danger from its use. It has a mild smell that of dishwasher detergent.

Side benefit: Meguiars plastic polish is a secretly known, very powerful aphrodisiac, even in the minuscule quantities that may be left on a pipe bit after cleaning !!!!!!!!! It is supposedly 10 times as powerful as Viagra !!!!!!! Enjoy !!!

I've used that polish on my acrylic stems, after I fixed them to fit better (via sandpaper).

Also, wet sandpaper in extremely fine grit (2000) works on vulcanite. I always seal w/mineral oil to fill the pores and help keep oxidation at bay. Of course, my pipes are only 1.5 yrs old.....................

I've used this before as well and have had great results. I've also used the liquid "bar keeper friend" with good results

Great, so all of that filing, sanding, "blue stuff" compound polishing and carnauba waxing was sure a waste of energy!

Naw, my stuff came out okay with elbow grease, really. I'm just jealous. Use whatever works and doesn't poison you/ruin the pipe.

Wait, deepbass you use 2000 grit on the stems? Sheesh, I was getting excellent shine with 250/500/1000, then compounding, then waxing. I couldn't imagine using 2000 grit! Your stuff must look like chrome!

I also use 2000 grit wet on stems (especially vulcanite) than micromesh higher grades, followed by a Meguiars plastic polish than a light coat of carnuba to finish.

Yeah, I'd be afraid to use 250. Not really looking to take a lot of material off, so slow is the way I go....

So that explains the reason all my bent stems are now straight :lol!:

I know, I know it's crazy, but I think some of the stems on recent acquisitions were smoked by pit bulls or something... the teeth marks were amazingly deep. 250 worked okay in very controlled areas. One pipe I had to actually file down the teeth marks to mere soft "dents," I was worried about going through the stem walls! :x I'm pragmatic in my approach and my results have been far, far better than I expected, for sure. Who knew old vulcanite could go through such an amazing transformation?

I'm only comfortable working on the vulcanite stems right now, as they happen to be on my cheap estates, and it's teaching me a few things. I do find going wet towards the finer grain usage on the sandpaper helps a little. I'll try using the 2000 as an additional step and see how that fares!
