about half a year or so ago my youngest boy came down when I was cleaning up some estate pipe I bought to resale, and he asked me if he could have one cause he thought it was cool, well he never used tobacco of any sort, so I thought it was odd, but since then I have given him and Edwards that I got from Cart, cause he loved the way it looked, and he has been eyeing up a Pioneer meerschaum I have.

Today was the first day he ever went to the local B&M with me and he went straight for the estate pipes, they had 3 boxes with different price levels, most of the estates they had were some DR.Grabows, some no names stuff like that, he had picked out a bent billiard, but I found a rusticated billiard I couldnt read the name cause I had no glasses on.. LOL but the pipe looked a tad bit better made , got it home read that it was a Sunrise Etched grain pipe, which turns out to be a comoys second.

I know there are some Comoy lovers out there, It looks pretty well made but does anyone have any experience with Sunrise?

Can't help with the Sunrise enquiry Harry but that is so awesome you lad is showing an interest in estate pipes, he may get seriously into it and become one of the true greats in pipe restoration, would love to know how that unfolds if you feel like sharing as time progresses.  :sunny:

I have no specific experience with Sunrise ... BUT, I have considerable experience with seconds in various product lines in general ...

In almost every instance, seconds are functionally the equal of the firsts in a line but have a cosmetic blemish of some sort ... and most often that blemish cannot be discerned by the uniformed non-expert ... JCPenney used to have an in-store brand called Towncraft ... clothing, hats, shoes, and other products ... ALL were major brands that for one reason or another were considered seconds ... their Towncraft shoes were made by International Shoe and had they not been seconds, would have carried the Florsheim name ... Towncraft hats would have had labels like Stetson and Resistol if they'd not been seconds ... in every case, it was a very minor cosmetic difference that caused them to be considered seconds ... functionally, they were the absolute equal of the big-name products ...

One of the best pipes I ever owned was a second that came from Ben Wade ... the only reason that pipe isn't in my current rotation is that I managed to break the doggone thing in a freak accident ... broke the shank right off the bowl ... my own fault, not a weakness in the pipe.

One additional thought ... if that Sunrise is of an old enough vintage, there is a very good chance it will be a superior smoker to a new Comoy inasmuch as it very well might have been made from a briar whose quality is simply not readily available any longer ... just sayin' ...

Thanks Steve, Thats kind of what I was hoping to find out , I went to the pipephil site and they had this branding covered but only said it was a comoy second, they didn't mention on when that name was used or if it still is or what not, the only thing it stated is that some were made in england and some in france the ones made in france had france stamped on them

I take this clip from the site
Does that mean the "Sunrise" name was used prior to the early 1970's?

and then here is this easy to read flow chart (yeah right) of the company history

My eyes go crossed trying to read this
