Ok years ago I started one of these for cigars, but I soon quit doing this because I found that there weren't a lot of cigars that I didn't like, and as long as I knew what kind of wrapper, and or filler the cigar was I learned to pretty much be able to guess if I would like a particular stick.

I am finding it more difficult with Pipe tobacco, and I think its mostly due to the how much a blend seems to change, from the 1st time I open the tin, jar it up let it sit for a while and revisit it later.

I was wondering if anyone else has tried to do this with pipe tobacco, and if so did they find it helpful,

Also I have been sitting here trying to decide if I want to try and organize it by brand, or by blends, ya know English, Virginia, aro's.

so if anyone else does this and if they have any tips to which way they organize it, I would love to hear about it,
Thanks

Hi Harry. I used to do the same with cigars and ran into the same eventuality that you did. I then tended to limit the sticks I would buy to ones I knew I liked. Pipe tobacco and I operate quite differently for myriad reasons: the time it takes to explore a tin, the changes it goes through in the jar, etc. The short answer is yes- but the how is a little more convoluted. I will occasionally write down notes as I'm enjoying a blend, or more often come inside and take to the computer/ipad after I've finished a smoke. I make documents for each blend I try and have a short form at the top listing: pipe used, time of day, accompanying beverage and any special notes regarding the setting, followed by a narrative review section. I then link the document to my Cellar Spreadsheet that I posted previously. Each blend becomes a hotlink to the dossier file. The nice part of linking it back is that I can change the sorting on a whim (style, blender, etc). This may be a bit OCD for some, but it works for me.

I wish I knew how to do spreadsheets and such so that I could do it on the pc!

Here's a tobacco rating form from NASPC's site.

http://www.naspc.org/images/tobacco%20rating%20form.pdf

I was going to create this in Excel so the overall averages could be auto-calculated and the form would be fillable as well.  I have to clear off my honey-do list before this happens though ;)
Thanks for the form Nismo... I really like the way it is structured. I also can never resist the opportunity to whip up a quick excel file, so I went ahead and made one as you described. (Save your post-honey do time for the fun stuff). The link is below.

Harry,
If you like the form as well, feel free to grab the excel file. It's ready made, and will create an average score by itself in the "Overall Rating of Tobacco" section. The Personal Rating is yours to fill in.

Just open > click File > "Save As" > Download

Enjoy!

Awesome, thanks brother! :)

I admire and respect those that can organize and often use that talent as a resource..i.e. these pages, TobaccoReview et al.
I claim to have some form of educated intuition at this point in my life. I could say that I have 40+ years of evolving experience and, or at the worst, 40 or so years of the Sisyphus Syndrome...
Our kitchen has a broader range and scope of palate..so the oils, spices, herbs are reasonably categorized.
Same for wines, red here, white there, spirits...I could go on
Alas my tobacco spectrum, while I have far more than I could consume for a year (maybe), the range is constrained and it is all on one shelf shared with a tall pipe rack and the back of a closet for the bulk remainders.
Odd shaped jars and containers...but I think I know where everything is...

it is more of a matter of remembering what I have liked and not cared for, to help me make better tobacco purchases in future, altho I admit, my tastes seem to change quite a bit, and I like variety in everything in life, and tobacco is no different, I can find aro's I like as well as va/pers, buleys, englishes, orientals , and straight virginias, so it's not like being a 1 trick pony where I know I'll be buying the same tins or bulk purchases monthly

Ah, choices....I am a peasant at heart and seek what keeps the wheels turning....nature, nurture

Thanks for the Idea of a spread sheet I found that I have Excel on my puter and now I have been trying to teach myself how to use it!
I think I can figure it out well enough to do what I want to with it, It came with an inventory list template so I am playing with that hopefully I will be able to figure otu how to create my own so that I can customize it to hold the information I want , I am slowly changing things on this template so anways, so a complete custom one probalky isn't too far away

Now if we could only get an online tool that logged all that so we could keep up and have it stored in the cloud...
