When you think of specific pipe makers, do you think of anything specific? For instance, when I think of Roush or J.T. Cooke, I think of blasts. When I think of Castello, I think of the hawkbill shape. Regretfully, I don't have any pipes by Roush or Cooke, nor do I have a Castello hawkbill. Still, for me, the association exists in my mind. How about you? Do you associate any pipemakers with specific shapes, finishes, size, etc? Just curious what you all have to say.

Charlie

I here you Charlie, certain brands to me do conjure images of certain pipes.
Castello: Sea Rock
Cavicchi: Straight grain / tons of birdseye
Dunhill: Classic Bulldog
Peterson: The entire original Sherlock Holmes series
Missouri Meerschaum: General Douglas MacArthur

I'll turn it around....These associations live for me:

Pokerhawk: Larry Roush
Peewit: Sixten Ivarsson
Blowfish: Lars Ivarsson
Cavalier Disc-Blowfish: Hiroyuki Tokutumi
Saucer: Peter Heeschen
Panels: Poul Ilsted
Wasp: Wolfgang Becker
Eskimo: Tom Eltang
Noseburner: Castello
Origami: Todd Johnson
Freehand: Preben Holm
Danish Apple: Jess Chonowitsch
Tadpole: Will Purdy
Volcano: Peter Matzhold
Calla Lily: Alex Florov
Pencil Shanks: Paolo Becker

I find the ideal archetypes of shapes tied to these makers:

Billiard - Dunhill

Prince - Dunhill

Bulldog - Dunhill

Rhodesian - Castello

Belge - Rad Davis

Horn - S. Bang

Brandy - Balleby

Panel - Ilsted

Furthermore.....

When I think 'Dunhill' the first thing that comes to mind is group 5 straight root billiard

'Radice' brings images of bark finished hawkbill

'Ser Jacopo' bring thoughts of the abstract picta series pipes

'Castello' brings images of perfect, golden flame grained Fiamattas and huge swaths of birdseye

'Ruthenberg' brings forth images of deeply craggy yet gracefully flowing sandblasts with wedding ring and cumberland bits

'Negoita' brings forth images of nature as art sculpted in briar

This is an interesting thread and it got me thinking:

Bulldog - Mark Tinsky and Poul Ilsted
Dublin - Charatan
Billiard - Dunhill
Tomato - Rad Davis
Blowfish - Lars Ivarsson
Hawkbill - Clarence Mickles and Radice
Freehand - Ben Wade
Horn - Ronny Thuner
Sandblasted Standard Shape - JT Cooke, Rad Davis
Sandblasted Freehands - Briar Ruthenberg
Organic Shapes - Rolando Negoita

Jay

Well, I'll throw my 2 cents in:

Preben Holm and Poul Winslow - Freehands

Tsuge - Any bambo shanks

Tinsky - Hexagon Calabash

Ruthenburg - beautiful deep and craggy sandblast

Paolo Becker - pencil shanked pipes

Rad Davis - squashed tomato and cobra styles

Ser Jac - Picta series

Lee Von Erck - spiral shanks

I have duplicated some but thought it was worth duplicating. I am sure when I think a little more I will come up with some others.

When I think of Jess Chonowitsch, I think of a second mortgage.

When I think of Ashton, I think of that one that I let get away at the Richmond show in '02.

When I think of Todd Johnson, I think of the one and only billiard I have ever seen by him that took my breath away.

And when I think of Peterson, I think of the trip we took to the Dublin shop which was a massive disappointment. Even though I did buy one of those green ashtrays.

Good idea, here is my take:-

Dunhill Bulldog

Charatan Skater

GBD Dublin

Barling Oom Paul

Peterson's System

James Upshall Lovat

Astleys Prince

Larry Roush- Silverwork
Kurt Balleby- Ammmmmazing straightgrain
Walt Cannoy- Crazy & overly intricate briar sculpture
Clarence Mickles- Rusication
Michael Parks- Awesome Shapes
Julius Vesz- Raindrops

Best,
Dock
:pipe:

When I think of Adam Davidson I think of hair that seems to live independently from the rest of his body.
