Is bars that allow cigarette smoking but have signs everywhere stating "No Cigar or Pipe Smoking." Even a bunch of the casinos up here have banned pipes and cigars but everyone else in there is smoking cigarettes. I've already been forced to stay on the ND side of the border with MN's smoking ban and yet it still seems like there are a lot of places where I'm effectively "banned." Even as bad as cheap cigars and cheap pipe tobacco taste, they still smell pretty good.

Anyone else in other areas run into this problem?

On a lighter note a few years ago I was talking with a guy at Stogies on Grand in St. Paul, MN, who told me about a bar in the town he used to live it where cigarette smoking was banned but pipes and cigars were welcome (note, it wasn't a cigar bar).

Lew,

Don't feel bad. The "No Pipes or Cigars" signs are going up all over the place around here. It is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen! You can smoke chemical laiden cigarettes but you better not light up a pipe.......go figure!

I even saw a sign the other day in a smoking establishment that said "As a Courtesy To Our Patrons Please Refrain From Smoking Pipes, Cigars or Clove Cigarettes". I really don't know what to make of it.

There is a discussion about it in another thread but I don't remember which one right now.

I've run into a few places in the Milwaukee area with similar bans, but feel it is up to the owner to determine what he or she will allow.

The few times I have been banned from a bar was for spitting on the floor.

Go figure.

Yes Lew & it sucks royaly! Our local Uno's pizza has a large outdoor courtyard where in the summer months bands play. They have several signs along the fence surrounding it that "Pipes & Cigars Are Not Allowed".So I guess it's okay for 50-100 folks to smoke cigarettes but heaven forbid we light up a pipe or stogie! :x :x :x :x Damn backwards country's gettin' worse everyday!

Best,
Dock

Yeah, you can only get away with that in those fancy bars, you know, the ones with sawdust on the floor :drunken:

That's seriously stoopid.

I guess the rationale is that pipes and cigars somehow smell "stronger," but it can hardly be argued that they smell worse than cigarettes. Usually, it's quite the opposite.

When I'm on a trip in another state (or a new restaurant close by) I carry a pouch of Kite or Bugler for that occasion. I'll ask if it's OK to smoke the "cigarette tobacco" in my pipe. If they say no, I walk. The Irish pub in Anderson, SC that I frequent allow me to smoke the Kite or Bugler until the kitchen closes at 10pm, then I can smoke "regular" pipe tobacco. They disallow pipes, cigars and clove cigarettes before the kitchen closes.

Jim...having a faint vision of pipemaker laying on his back in that bar trying to spit on the ceiling.

Before the full ban went in, I had encountered a few of those signs at various resturants, it always seemed a bit silly to me. What kills me is Casino's that don't allow a pipe or cigar, but allow cigs.

Smoking is banned in all bars here anyway. It is still allowed in casinos, but only until next January, if memory serves.

Well... it may get worse... if you follow Canada's lead... the law in British Columbia states...

1,000 Gram Limit
Only tobacco wholesalers and retailers are
permitted to purchase and possess large quantities
of tobacco.
Under the Act, a person who holds more than 1,000
grams of tobacco (equivalent to five cartons of
cigarettes) is, in the absence of evidence to the
contrary, considered to be holding the tobacco for
sale.
This would certainly limit not just smoking but any one who "cellars" tobacco. There are huge fines, just for possession.

 Paul

It comes down to what I was telling a guy the other day.
There are alot of places I can walk in with a doob fired up 'for medicinal purposes' and NOBODY can say shit without fear of me owning the joint (pun intended) BUT if I walk into the same place with a cig, cigar, pipe I can be fined AND arrested.

As a close friend said ,I sometimes wonder if some cosmic shipping clerk didnt send me to the wrong planet.

PB, its the right planet but the clerk's time travel is all screwed up :cyclops: :bounce: :affraid:
