I thought it might be interesting to have an annual Get Out Your Gourd Day, where if we can agree on a date, all members who have a gourd (and probably rarely use them) will post about what they've fired up in the beasties. If the idea takes, we could have an annual Meer Day, Cob Day, Morta Day, etc.

I was thinking about a celebratory day like New Year's to get the Gourds out. Celebrate that we survived 2020! What to you all think??? ;)

Count me in. Suggestions on what smokes best in a gourd?
I always think of Sherlock and English blends, never actually tried an aromatic in a gourd - would probably smoke cool and dry. Personally I'll be smoking my own blend called "Inglorious Bastard" which is taken from several commercial English blends that by themselves didn't tickle my fancy. I assume by now that everybody here has seen the pipe scene in the movie Inglorious Bastards?

Ps how about a pipe you like the least day?
Well, I'd have to rule out the "look only" pipes that I talked about on another thread, but the idea of bringing out a decent pipe that doesn't get much play time seems a worthy idea. We might get an interesting diversity of responses to that idea. ;)

Bru, I was talking more about pipes one isn't really fond of but for some reason we have not disposed of. Mine would be a Stanwell beech wood I got in a 3fer deal from p&c for 20 bucks. Very so so pipe but won't get rid of it because honestly who would want it, lol.

Agree. When I had my old gourd calabash I only smoked english or balkan blends in it channeling my inner Sherlock Holmes. Liked a blend called 221 Baker street but can't remember the producer.

English/Balkan/Oriental only in my gourd!!! That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!!!!!
Second that. Prepping for the event

Ditto for me, although as we all know, Mr. Holmes was never actually known to smoke a calabash pipe, and the association seems to be by Hollywood rather than from The Canon. But I'm in...

Been a long time since I watched the original, but if memory serves me he smoked a calabash style but not a gourd or a meershaum..

Jeez, that one in the upper left is huge! How deep is the bowl?

Looks like we have enough interest. I'll be aiming for New Year's Day, but you can do New Year's Eve if that seems more festive. Try to post a pic if you can.

Doyle's writing (The Canon) lists three three kinds of pipes: a black or dirty, oily, clay pipe; an old briar; and a long Cherrywood. No mention is made of the shape of the briar; we have the actors who have portrayed him to thank for that. It seems that the calabash was introduced because it it large and easy for the audience to see on stage.
