I appreciate the fact that a pipe marque is paying homage to such a great (fictional) character. Buying a few, thus, was an idea that made sense to me. So I did just that.

Baskerville Dark Smooth

Rathbone Dark Smooth

Strangely (or not?), I do not fancy the sandblasted or rusticated finishings.

I have twelve Petersons from the various Sherlock Holmes incarnations. I like fairly large pipes, so most of the SH pipes fall right in my wheelhouse. My most recent is also a Baskerville which I've yet to initiate. All fine smokers (so far) and to my eye the shapes are some of the most attractive Peterson has done.

I actually prefer the Rathbone. I do not own any Peterson pipes at the moment, I had an Irish Bent years ago (Peterson second).

I think my preference is related to my preference in the actors, in order Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Brett, and Basil Rathbone. All very trim and a little prim.

I agree wholeheartedly that a blasted or rusticated finish seems "off" for a Holmes pipe.

I actually really like the rough finish on some of the Holmes series so long as they are not the "pinecone" rustication that Peterson has done on some pipes.. I'm not sure if my Hudson, Deerstalker and Milverton are rusticated or sandblasted but I preferred it over the smooth in those shapes. The Milverton looks good either way but when I got mine I thought this particular pipe had a bit more character than the available smooths I looked at. But I agree that many of the shapes just don't look right in a rough finish. Just my opinions of course...

The Hudson looks to me it`s a blast. The other two are rusticated.
