does anyone know what brand thes pipes are?

I have to agree with the others that the bent looks like a GBD with that oval. No idea what the bulldog is. At $18 for the pair, if I lived anywhere near there I'd be tempted to buy them just for the practice in cleaning and rehabbing old pipes if nothing else.

    Penzance Problems

I agree, sounds like sugar crystals in which case that is a good and desirable thing.

    What's in your Bulldog?

I don't really dedicate a pipe to a particular tobacco blend or even style. A bulldog can be good for pretty much any tobacco type as can any other shape- I think the size of the bowl matters more for some tobacco types. That said, one of my bulldogs is more and more becoming a dedicated...

    Wow, great deal! Congratulations!

    What are you smoking?

I'm heading out in about an hour for a smoke, it's in the upper 30's or maybe 40 degrees out. Cold, but not so cold I can't be out for a while. So, I'm thinking about a bigger pipe, or two bowls of a smaller pipe. I'm not sure which pipe- I'm thinking about one of my old no-name basket pipes...

    Dedicated Pipes

I know it is sacrilege but I don't dedicate my pipes to a particular blend or even a style. I've found that it usually takes several bowls of the same tobacco before a noticeable ghosting issue. I have a lot of pipes, I also smoke cigars, and I don't always smoke everyday, so my pipes tend to...

My first go at buying bulk...

I'm glad to hear that your first foray into bulk was satisfying. I've always bought more bulk than tins. In fact, it was just in the past few months that I've gotten into tins (after almost 20 years of pipe smoking). I usually bought bulk from my local tobacco store. I was the opposite of...

    What are you smoking?

Oh, when I go out to smoke in an hour or so, I'm thinking something weather appropriate. It isn't snowing, sleeting or raining anymore, but the ground is wet and snow covered, many parking lots and sidewalks are icy, and there is salt on the ground. If I fall I don't want a nice pipe getting...

    What are you smoking?

Nice thread, a lot of great pipe and tobacco combos (it is long so I only skimmed it, I did not read it all, so I'll have to peruse it more thoroughly later). Haven't had a smoke yet today, but yesterday I did two combinations: -Peterson Kilsdale XL15 (a nice bent bulldog) with 4noggins' "Bald...

    Greetings!

Welcome to a great forum, and to pipe smoking. I'm new to the forum, but not to pipe smoking. I have been smoking pipes and cigars for nearly 20 years (started with the pipe, added cigars a year later). As has already been suggested, you'll want more than one pipe. You need to rest them a...

Hmm, I was looking at my list of Petersons and I just noticed something... They are all bents. Even the new (to me) Sherlock Holmes coming to me is a bent. I think I'd better get myself a Peterson in a straight pipe, just so I can have one. Maybe a Canadian or a Lovat, or a straight Bulldog...

    Resting Time For A Briar?

Leaving the pipe cleaner in the mouthpiece for a day or two after cleaning to absorb all the moisture isn't a bad idea (though it isn't necessary). I wouldn't plug the bowl with a paper towel though. It is probably better to keep it open so it can air dry.

    Resting Time For A Briar?

I've seen it suggested that one should have 7 pipes. You start the day with one, then put it away for a week before you smoke it again. It is probably excessive, and I've seen the 7-pipe rotation generate a lot of internet debate, but no one has ever suggested it isn't enough. Personally, I'd...

I have two Sytem pipes- a 303 which I bought new, and an estate that was in pretty sorry shape when I got it that I've been cleaning up. I'm giving away the estate pipe to a newbie (with the suggestion that he send it to Peterson for a new mouthpiece since that is the only part that is still...

    Hey from Maryland

If you've never been, you need to get to Chesapeake. It is in Edgewater so it isn't as convenient, but it is a great place. The owners are nice people and, while mainly cigar people, they do know a bit about pipes. It is a great environment- big screen TVs, DVD, PSIII, dart board, chess...

Thinking about trying a plug tobacco

Thanks for the recommendation. I have never tried a Peterson's tobacco, but I love their pipes (not that that means anything with tobaccos, but I'd love to try them and like them). A mildly topped tobacco should be fine, I like my English blends, and I like my aromatics. As for the G&H blends...

    Latakia

I'm another fan of Latakia, but then I'm not discriminating. I also love a good burley, Virginia, and even Aromatics. The one that I learned I'm not a big fan of when I blended my own was Perique. I could load a blend with a good amount of Latakia and be happy (I love the smell of winter with...

    Hey from Maryland

I go to Davidus by the mall (closer to my apartment) or the Chesapeake Cigar and Tobacco Company in Edgewater (near work) most of the time when I go to a shop. When I go downtown I'm more likely to hang out at the docks. I only get to The Smoke Shop maybe once or twice a year.

Thanks for all the welcomes and for the thoughts on my bio. Blue Max, which Savinelli 320 is that in your profile pic? I love that shape and really want one myself. While I do have a few favorite series for that shape (if I buy new it will be in one of 3 or 4 styles), if I buy on Ebay I could...

Thinking about trying a plug tobacco

Yup, just like the title says, even though I've smoked a pipe for around 20 years, I've never tried a plug tobacco. I'm thinking it is time. I'm thinking about starting with G.L. Pease Jackknife Plug. What else should I consider? I tend to like aromatics, but like everyone else I don't like...
