I'm late (again) but in!

You probably already know this, but you have to drill the mortise and the airway on different angles: The problem is that when the bend becomes extreme you wind up drilling into the mortise wall.  Some makers will cap this off with a shank extension so it is never seen, others just leave it...

Thank you,  The wood is actually the bigger cost, but the fact remains it's much cheaper to just buy a pepper mill.  I just view the volun-told thing as a form of positive criticism ;)
