Just made up a spreadsheet to keep track of all the stuff I have acquired.

Close to 100 blends (many dupes), but if my conversion is right, it looks like I have accumulated...... carry the one..... square root..... uh.....

Oh dear.

Also, if you use tobaccocellar.com to keep track, you can save a backup of your cellar as a .csv file and import that into Excel for the über pipe nerd in you :cheers:

I've seen that site - have it saved as a regular research tool for tobaccos, and so forth - but can't log into it at work (it's flagged as a "pornography" site for some reason).

I may move it there, but right now, I am just tracking what I have, trying to keep tabs on what I want to sit on (numbering multiple tins of something), and notes for things I don't know about yet (a ton of 1 oz. tasters). And most importantly, jot down notes for things I like and don't like - so I get get more of what I like and not repurchase the stuff that doesn't tickle my fancy.

Organized by (the columns):

Company
Blend name (and tin number for multiples)
Purchase Date
Opened Date
Tin size/bulk weight
Blend type
Cut (ribbon, Flake, etc.)
Container (bulk, tin, bag)
For Cellar (asterisk column for sorting)
Notes

If I am missing anything, let me know.  I will be updating in a week or so when the 15+ aged tins arrive.  :lol:
 
I'm a complete data nerd and took the imported .csv from tobaccocellar.com and tweaked the spreadsheet to my liking.

On my first worksheet is all cellared and open and the second worksheet is finished tins. Here are the fields I use:

Brand
Blend
Container -Tin, Mason Jar, etc
Weight - in ounces
Source - where it came from
Price
Purchase date
Tin date
Open date
Finish date
Status - Opened, cellared, finished, given
Location - what box, tub, etc is this container in
VC - Vendor code - this field is linked to the source field so that when I type a vendor into the source cell, it auto-populates this cell with a specific vendor ID. For example, if I type in Smokingpipes.com into the source cell, the VC cell for that row would populate with 11. I use this 2-digit code on the stickers that go on containers.
Serial Number - 5-digit serial number also used on tin stickers, this field also comes from tobaccocellar.com

I use a price gun with a 2-row sticker for my inventory system. Top row of numbers is the purchase date in the YYYYMMDD format. Bottom row is 5 digit serial number and 2-digit vendor code, like XXXXX/XX. Then mason jars get their own custom label with maker, blend, date jarred, and weight.  Sure, maybe it's a little overkill...maybe it's a little OCD...but I like it and it works for me.  :face:

I even have it setup to where rows alternate colors when the blend name changes in the list to make it easier to read and cells that calculate up how much (by weight) is cellared, opened, finished, and given and convert it from ounces to lbs & oz. I've toyed with the idea of putting some pretty charts on another worksheet, but maybe later :p
 
Gees! You guys think too hard. I have about 30 mason's and about 70 tins.
I mark each mason's lid with a labeler the blend and date received and the tins with just the date. The mason's I smoke out of I mark by hand with an "O" for open. Don't need to mark the tins because if I start a tin I finish it. What more do ya need. Easy Peasey, Japanessey! ;)
 
I was keeping a spreadsheet for a while and I gave up once I hit a certain point with it. Perhaps I lost interest... I do admire Chris's system though.

Anyway here's my new system.

8 bail top jars - if it's in these, I am smoking it.
Masons for aging, all labelled ala Sharpie on a strip of masking tape, Blend/Date jarred.
Unopened Tins just hang out, and I'll mark the bottom of any tin without a manufacture date with the purchase date upon receipt.

This is the most I can do w/o driving myself crazy.
 
My system is very similar to Cart's... Except I don't mark opens open because if it's open I have it set somewhere I can reach it.
 
Tin?,,,date bought
Jar?,,,date bought, what it is.

Toss in closet, find em someday.

A precise system.

As a semi-pro slacker, I'll likely lose interest someday. :lol:

I'm riding the wave for now, using it as:

1) check on purchases - not only keeping track of what I have, but how much. I too easily just "tack on a few tins while I'm here". Shocking to see how fast it adds up. I'd have guessed a couple few pounds at most.

2) a spot to track what I like and don't, take notes and learn about blends as I try them.

Until then though, I do want to do something that makes sense, in case it continues. It may hit a middle ground and more to tobacco cellar dot com.
 
Also, don't forgot about http://www.thepipetool.com/ that our very own Pylorns is working on! It's currently in alpha testing, but when it's complete you should be able to import from tobaccocellar.com as well. Nice thing about ThePipeTool is you'll be able to not only keep track of your tobacco, but your pipes too!

I agree, Bro; but in my case, with 52lbs, I need to keep a basic track of my stuff, if only for the sake of being able to figure out what I have, so what I could smoke for the next tin.

Imagine guys with 100lbs +++ "Shit, I can't remember what I have"; "Gee, if I would have remembered I had that GL Pease, I would have cracked it open instead" - then he forgets he had it when he opens up the next tin. :lol!:

Finally got it entered into Tobaccocellar.com.

Somehow managed to add another pound+ of aged stuff.

Talk about laborious.
