On the surface it seems off, but then again, you can't force or organize class and honor (or self-respect, for that matter) in a society that encourages personal ego and pride above all. Sportsmanship is for lovers of a game, appreciating the fact they got to play, and play against worthy opponents. Teams at school-level are almost more of a gang-mentality than a team. This isn't always the case, but...the signs are too obvious to ignore. Beyond that, look at the examples and standards of certain players in pro sports. Sad truth, but if you can turn ego into money...there's the inspiration.
Sports being the last bastion of decent, real entertainment, it's on the verge of eating itself with everything else before too long.
