If you notice in the opening of Dragnet there is a Los Angeles Police Department Badge, number 714. Why 714?? Jack Webb was a huge Babe Ruth fan, and thought he was the greatest baseball ballplayer who ever lived. 714 was the number of career homeruns hit by Babe Ruth, a record for MANY years until surpassed by Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds (long after the Dragnet series was made). It was Webb's way of paying tribute to the "Bambino" !
