    Peretti's "Paint Can Tins"

I've gone through maybe 20 or 30 of the bigger tins. If you are lucky and got a perfectly round tin with a perfectly round cover and the thing did not get knocked about in transportation or storage, they will maybe provide a decent seal. Maybe. I dried out a pound of Omega one time because I...

    Finite Amount of Bowls?

I should probably go re-read Rick's book to get some context, but it seems to me that given the mixture of heat, moisture, tars, saliva and all the other stuff that is generated by the act of smoking, even a fairly well-cared for and regularly cleaned pipe would, after a while, start to get a...

    The Franck Method

Thanks for the link Doc M, I should have known that Neill had researched this topic.

    The Franck Method

A couple of years ago this was a hot topic on the pipe boards. Do any of you use this method? As you will recall, Achim's recommendation was to use a torch lighter (in addition to the whole stuffing the pipe thing). I tried the packing method (sans torch lighter) a couple of times and it...

Olive wood shank extensions - experience?

Not quite on topic but holy-moly Richard, that is some serious birdseye.

    B&M's

I tend to agree, and to have some sympathy for some tobacconists' view that pipe guys, from a sales perspective, cannot be relied upon to sustain a viable trade, so there is in almost every B&M a discernible bias towards the cigar trade. You'll sometimes see threads in pipe forums about...

How many pipes do you smoke a day/week?

During a normal week, I try to stop by the local B&M and hang with the boys on weekends and enjoy a couple of bowls. Weekdays are tough between work, children and chores. During the holidays, I try to step up the game; my personal best was fourteen bowls one day last Christmas, starting with...

    Stanwells AGAIN

Coincidentally, I picked up one of my old Stanwells last night (this one is about ten years old) and smoked a bowl of old Nightcap in it and it was pretty darned good. I really do admire the quality of the stems and briar and would have to say that they smoke better than any machine made pipe I...

    Houston Pipe Meeting

Jason, Crofts carries a bunch of in-house blends and I enjoy a couple of their English blends (Trafalgar and Cooke's No. 5 - which is named after the Drucquers blend) I also really like their London Press, which is a pressed Red Va flake. Some of my pals on Smokers Forums who are big burley...

    Peter Heeschen pipes

I have 17-18 Heeschens and love em all. Peter's pipes are small, light, well balanced and they smoke really well. Not sure how Peter gets such a nice open draw out of such a small pipe, but the results are marvelous.

Wassup Rad, good to see you here. Please pass the Gray Poupon. BTW, the proper Engrish is "I have arriven" that is the correct past participle form.

    What is Good Briar?

That's about as good as answer as I've seen to this question. Funny that you should mention Castellos - I have may 15-20 Castellos and have yet to smoke a bad one. Whatever it is that they do to their wood works for me. Anyone know what their secret is?

    What is Good Briar?

This is a question that I posted in another forum: In the tobacconists where I hang out, the older guys often lament the loss of "good briar" in today's pipes, pointing to their antediluvian GBDs or what have you and sniffing at my Ruthenberg/Jody Davis/[insert modern carver here] in disdain...
