Royal Irish with 9mm filter? Anyone heard of that?

Thanks for the input! I'm pretty much convinced to go for it after some research and asking a few people who are knowledgable about Peterson's in person, but I need one last little push off the ledge, as it were. :D The Rosslare Classic and Rosslare Royal Irish lines have a yellowish (orange?)...

Royal Irish with 9mm filter? Anyone heard of that?

So I'm looking at buying a Peterson Royal Irish on the ol' ebay, but apparently it's a 9mm filter with an "amber" acrylic stem. I've never heard of a Royal Irish with a filter (or any stem other than black acrylic/ebonite) and I want to make sure this isn't a knockoff or some such nonsense...

Dating McClelland tins with less than the full six numbers

That was my first thought, but I'm finding it hard to believe that this tin sat on a shelf in the smokingpipes warehouse for six years without being sold. I guess it's possible though!

Dating McClelland tins with less than the full six numbers

Yeah, I'm familiar with McClelland's standard six-digit blend/batch/year system. I'm just confused about these two since they deviate from that. Like, 133 9: is that blend 1 or blend 13, from batch 3 or 33? And does 9 mean tinned in 2009? And if so, why doesn't it say 09 like normal? Or is this...

Dating McClelland tins with less than the full six numbers

I just received an order including a tin of Syrian Star and Ringlow Syrian Reserve, and they both have odd tin codes that deviate from the standard six numbers. Anyone know how to read these codes and date the tins? SS: 133 9 RSR: 140 13 (Both have a ~two-digit space between the first set...

Semois Group Buy over on /r/PipeTobacco

Not sure where to put this; please move it somewhere appropriate if need be! Anyway, I'm sure most of you have read the NYTimes article about Vincent Manil's Semois by now. A few guys over at PMF successfully organized a group buy a while back, and I am now thoroughly enjoying the stuff. :D...

    Storing Stonehaven

I was lucky enough to acquire an 8oz bag of Esoterica Stonehaven (finally!), and now I'm opening it up to transfer it to a mason jar. However, these flakes are rather enormous and don't stack horizontally in the jar like most flake tobaccos—do you guys do anything about that or just stuff them...

    Dating Esoterica Tobaccos

Does anyone know if there's a clear indicator of the original seal date for a tin/bag of Esoterica Tobacco? I know G.L. Pease, McClelland, and others stamp or sticker a date on the bottom of their tins, but I can't find anything on my bag of Penzance.

    Haddo's Delight - Aged

And here I'd almost given up on Haddo's, after fighting my way through a solid 2oz or so. I can tell that it's really good, deep down somewhere, but it's just so harsh. Snaps like an angry Rottweiler. I'll have to try leaving it in a jar for a few years and come back to it then.

    RYO guys? Gotta question.

I used to do the same thing with pipe tobacco, and I still have the materials lying around for when I have people over who don't smoke a pipe but want to join me out on the patio. I've personally never been able to detect the taste of burning Zig-Zag paper, but I'm sure if you could back in the...

    #2, Straight Billiard

I was shooting for another classic billiard on this one. It probably should have been rusticated, but I wanted to practice contrast staining some more. Feel free to tear it apart—I want to get better at this!

    First Pipe Progress Thread—Finished!

All done! As a first try, I feel pretty good about this one, but it's far from perfect. I'll try and upload a better picture of the top/bottom profile when I get home from work, but I really blew it on the billiard symmetry from that angle. I got a little aggressive with the sanding wheel...

    First Pipe Progress Thread—Finished!

It's been a while, but I finally found some time to work on this thing. I also finished my shaping setup with an arbor and DA pad from Kurt Huhn, and it works magnificently well: As for the pipe: I was incredibly lucky with this piece of wood—so far there is only one tiny flaw (visible in...

I found and alternative to a BaccyFlap!

As the guy who received the prototype version of Adam's replicas, I can attest that they seal very well and the tobacco inside retains normal moisture for at least 12 hours (haven't tried leaving anything in there longer than that). They hold about two bowls of tobacco and are just small enough...
